"I guess." Kayte rubbed an eye, wincing; she was getting sick of her headaches. "Least we know why the Oro were so intent on getting rid of him though." She looked at Damien. "He doesn't hate people on sight unless they start crap with him first. He's nice when he wants to be."

"People hate me even when I never did anything to them." Damien didn't really want to tell them that it was due to his father, and his own uncanny likeness to Azhdeha. If Ethan had encountered Azhdeha before, then whether or not he reacted badly to Damien would depend on what that encounter had been like.

Considering it was doubtful Ethan had ever gone to Carcer, that wasn't likely to happen. "I don't hate you, and that's saying something, kid." Kayte laughed. "Alright, I'm kidding, but I'm serious." The elevator 'ding'ed as it hit the top floor.

"Well, that's a first. So, I'll have to go to the top floor every time I come to work here? Hope not, cuz that would be a drag."

"Not every time, just this once and some later times as well, but not often. It's your first day, and in any case all the new people have to come up here on the first day. I have to come up every week because he has to sign something from the secretary's office downstairs."

"Is there going to be someone around to show me the ropes then? I pick things up easily, so I don't need someone tagging along behind me all the time after that."

"I'll do it; Ethan's out and about." Kayte yawned widely, rubbing her eyes, and she started walking down the hallway. "The assistant's this way."

Damien shrugged, trying to look indifferent, and followed Kayte down the corridor.

She opened a door and peeked inside; a voice message blared in her left ear, making her wince visibly. "I'm not here right now, leave a message stating your business and I'll call you into my office if you're in the building when I get back."

"I hate it when he does that." She sighed and waited for the beep, and when it came up she said, "It's Kayte Thomas with a new guy, Damien Van Helsing. Yes, that's his name. I brought him up for a briefing; you weren't here."

Damien had winced too as the loud message hurt his super sensitive ears. "Does he often do that?"
