So, here's another version:

Bulked up the armour and boots a little, and added some brighter highlights on the mail. Better?

Perhaps if you made the rings in this format:

0 Is pixels, _ is just a filler or whatever, ignore it.

_00
0__0
0__0
_00

Instead of

_0
0_0
0_0
_0

Other than that great stuff.

Looking at your chainmail, each ring should have shades in them too. You are shading it in the same style as a shirt, but the rings themselves will have different shading on them too. This will eliminate the awkward smoothness that your chainmail has

I have no idea if that makes sense xD I'm a little confused today.

Well, I tried the bigger rings, but it looked kinda huge and didn't really work. But then I looked up some more pictures of chainmail, and noticed some of them were layered. So what I tried to do is overlay the bigger rings over the smaller ones.

I'm not sure how I like it, but I think it's at least a step in the right direction.

@Kitty - yeah, but shading them individually is kinda a pain in the backside. I cheated by shading with the colour replacer, then adding in some individual shadows and highlights here and there, but I'd hoped it wouldn't be so obvious XD

That is a huge improvement. It looks less like some shiny shirt pattern now and more like chainmail. Looking at the outline of it, it'd probably add to the realism to continue the chain on the outline too. I think then you'll have it.

The pattern with the chains is also a bit too regular, but I can understand not wanting to spend oddles and ooddles of time on just a bunch of chain links.

Thanks again for all the comments, it was all really helpful!

Anyway, here's an old doll that I hadn't posted before. I don't remember why I didn't initially post it, but I don't want to leave it collecting dust in my folders forever, since I did spend a lot of time on it.

There's a story behind it, but it'd probably bore you to tears XD. No CC this time, please; I know it isn't the best, but it's old and I'm not gonna change it unless I decide to do a complete remake.

Forget CC, I'm giving some serious praise! The floorboards are SO realistic! and the maps/papers on the desk are cool too! =D

It looks like a background I did ages ago, but the back wall was brick and again, the floorboards where much worse.

Thanks for the comment! And here's another not-exactly-new doll...

I made it a while ago, but didn't post it because the shading sucked. Now I worked on it a little, and while it's still not very good, it's presentable at least. The skirt and the darker pink shirt look bad, but I like the shading on the brown and light pink parts.
