Default Power over life and death. - 12-17-2010, 01:31 AM

This topic is largely to discuss the amount of control each person should have over their own life and how much power others should have to decide who lives and dies.

Among the things we should discuss here;

Should doctors be able to choose who to operate on? For example, if a poor immigrant and a rich hospital funder were both in the emergency room and desperately in need of surgery, should the surgeon have the power to choose which one he should save and which should die?

Likewise, should people in extreme pain be allowed to choose death? While I would never want to die, and would cling to life with both hands, I believe those who have no hope of recovery and no further reason to live should be allowed to die, and therefore skip straight over several months of slow, painful, pointless death.

Should governments be able to kill the people as they wish? Is it really for us mere mortals to judge who should die and who shouldn't? I really don't think it is. Besides, the monotony of living in a cage would eventually prove to be worse than death for animals guilty of murder, rape or other such atrocities.

Should the plug -EVER- be pulled on braindead or comatose patients? I don't believe that it's a choice anybody should make. People who need to be hooked up to life support systems should be housed in some sort of facility specially for them, not just killed off when they become a burden or clog up hospital beds. There really is no saying if these people can come back; and it's always worth waiting. Always.

It's a morally grey zone. Which means it largely falls to the opinions that I implore you to post below.

IMO, in an emergency situation, surgery should go to the one who needs it most, regardless of social status. If both need it equally, it should be on a first come, first served basis.

I support euthanasia - if somebody is in extreme pain and has no hope of recovery, they have every right to choose a quick and painless death instead of suffering. And I also think there should be the option to have the plug pulled on braindead patients if they have no hope of recovery and if their family wants it. Though obviously there should be some sorts of measures in place to prevent the system from being abused and people being killed just to save money or free up hospital spaces.

I'm not really a fan of the death penalty, though I think people who are given a life sentence should have the choice whether they want to spend life in prison or be executed.
