Default Miss California Controversy-Update 11/8! - 04-21-2009, 08:38 PM

For those who don't know, competitor for the "Miss USA" title, Miss California, recently made a statement during the competition that saying this:
Quote:
“I think it’s great Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what in my country, in my family I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody there, but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be, between a man and a woman.
This statement has been followed by one from the Miss California director, who is rumored to be possibly removing her crown.
Quote:
As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman. I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit. I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone and religious beliefs have no politics in the Miss California family.
Following her statement, she has been all over the news. Many of her interviews can be found, all of which she claims she would've won if the question didn't come up and makes accusations about Perez Hilton being responsible for her loss.

So, I guess the real questions are:
Should she have censored her answer and said the politically correct thing?
Is this an appropriate thing to be asking about in a pageant anyways?
Should her crown be removed based on her answer or behavior following the statement?
Do you think Perez is acting unreasonably(its been reported that he has called her slurs)? Does he have a right to be this upset?

Personally, while I don't think her crown should be removed for the statement, I think her behavior has been disgusting afterwards. I understand defending her position, but she is now making it seem like the entire world was against her because she is against *** marriage. Her accusations are disgraceful and I am inclined to believe that maybe her crown should be removed for them since clearly she doesn't embody what a pageant winner is supposed to be, composed and polite.

I also though don't believe this was an entirely appropriate question. I don't expect these women to really think out very thoughtful answers to controversial problems and I don't think we could've expected much from this woman. Hell, I'm certain if you asked her about the "traditional" family structure, she would've said its great. She's privileged, upper class, white, and Christian. Those things usually add up to a bubblehead who doesn't really think for herself and happily goes against everything every civil rights movement has been trying to fix.

Perez Hilton has nothing to do with it, I think; he just calls it how he sees it. As for Miss California, she needs to grow up and learn to watch her mouth because the way she is acting now is disgraceful not just to the Miss California Pageant, but to the USA as a whole, especially once the Miss USA competition comes up. I honestly don't care what she "thinks" (honestly I think her parents told her to say it) about g*y marriage; free country, but she didn't have to be so crass about it.

I don't think she should have censored her answer just because she is competing in the Miss USA pageant because is that a good reason to censor what your thoughts on something like that are. I don't think so. That would be like trying to fool america. She probably should have been a bit more vague and not said what her family believed in. She should have just left it at how happy she that this country would allow same-sex marriages.

It probably should have been asked because pageant girls would be stupid enough to do exactly what Miss Californa did and they should just avoid all this crap that is going on.

Her crown should NOT be taken away because of what she said but it should be taken away because of how she acts now. God, its humilating for the US and Californa.

she shouldn't have to censor her answer if that is the honest answer to the question as lieing is far worse in my opinion. I beleive this question to be comepltely inappropriate to ask as there are many factors that contribute into your decision as to why or why not you may approve of same sex marriage. There are traditional and cultrual values the come into play when that question is asked and it can possibley offend people answering it or like the crowd offended them becauase they did not like the answer. There are many betetr questions to ask that are not so controversial and hurtful to particular groups of people
Her crown should of not been removed, because of her answering the question honestly. Althoguht her behaviour afterwards was horrid. She still answered the question honestly which was required of her.

I agree. I may not like her answer or beliefs, but its no ones place to punish her for them. Her behavior afterwards is a shame though. She doesn't need to inform people that she is praying for Perez Hilton or go all over the place with this and I am disgusted about how the media is putting her up on a pedestal. They are acting like she is the messiah because she "stood up for her beliefs". What she's done isn't standing up for her beliefs, its been making catty swipes at a man who clearly was hurt by her answer.

Edit: Updates! Wait till you guys hear some of her latest statements.

Quote:
Rex: So, you think if you had just expressed your opinion that marriage is between a man and a woman, which 52 percent of the voters in California agree with you on that --

Carrie: Right, I'm representing not only the state of California but the majority of people in our nation.
Here she says she represents most of the nation, acting as if ideas aren't changing.

Quote:
Statement from Keith Lewis, one of the state directors for the Miss California pageant: "Given the fact that Carrie Prejean's first act upon returning to California was to headline five services at a church that promotes homosexuality as both unnatural and abnormal, we stand by our concern for her individual image and look forward to a time in the near future when she can put down her personal agenda and assume the responsibilities associated with being MISS CALIFORNIA USA, including promoting our official platform, 'The Beauty of California,' which sole purpose (sic) is to embrace diversity."
Statement from Keith Lewis letting us know about her actions. I'd say that is pretty sick and grounds for crown removal. Her personal agenda is not what this nation is about.
Quote:
Rex: I understand that you were raised to believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, and I understand that you grew up knowing that you were always going to marry a guy, but you're heterosexual. Um, some people are born ***, maybe, you think?

Carrie: No, I don't think so.

Rex: OK, so now we're getting somewhere.

Carrie: I think it's a behavior that develops over time.

Rex: Why would someone choose it, given that if you choose that, you get discriminated against?

Carrie: Um, because obviously Perez Hilton doesn't think that there's anything wrong with it.

Rex: No, but if being *** is a choice, rather than something you're born with, why would you choose something that's going to lead to your being discriminated against? What would be the motivation?

Carrie: I'm not sure what the motivation would be.

Rex: OK. Me either.
Here, she lets everyone know that being *** is an option. People choose to be ***, dontcha know, despite evidence proving that exposure to certain hormones in the womb in a disproportionate amount actually can lead to it.

Here's the worst part. These are actual views from her church, ones that she clearly shares.
Quote:
There are also moral repercussions stemming from homosexual behavior as evidenced by the fact that one third of all sexual crimes against children are committed by homosexuals even though they are representative of only one percent of the population. Pedophilia has even been called central to the *** lifestyle. The agenda of the North American Man Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) is to lower the age of consent so that sex with children will be legal.
The article revealing this goes on further to point this out:
Quote:
For anyone living under a rock, the homosexuality-pedophilia canard was debunked three decades ago. What's worse, the "research" Miss C's church is quoting - they also claim that 30% of *** men will die or get AIDS by the time they're 30 - appears to come from a known hate group (as designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center) led by one Paul Cameron, a quack researcher thrown out of all the top professional societies in his field.
AMERICAblog News| A great nation deserves the truth: Miss California's church says pedophilia is central to the *** lifestyle
Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters

At this point in time, she's going way too far. Her crown needs to be removed now since clearly her statements are coming from a hate group and not from personal beliefs.

I think her crown should be taken away not for her answer, but for the way she is acting now. If she had won Miss USA, I have reason to believe she would have rubbed it in everybody's face. She's a disgraceful brat.

To play devil's advocate here, I don't like the way that a lot of people are describing her as a homophobe. The definition of a homophobe is someone who fears and hates homosexuals; nowhere in her statement did she say anything like that. Therefore, getting upset over her statement to me is an overreaction, just like saying you're offended cuz next door puts up a Nativity scene at Christmas, or cuz you see something on South Park that pokes fun at your particular social group.

Therefore, I'm of the opinion that if Perez Hilton was offended, he needs to shut his piehole and wait til someone makes a statement or even physical attack on homosexuals. To act butthurt just cuz some bimbo made a general statement giving her views, which she had every right to do even if they didn't fit the status quo, just seems a bit childish to me when there are people who have been injured or even killed by genuine homophobic behaviour.

Yes, her statement was a bit unwise, given the current climate, but the question shouldn't have been asked in the first place. Yes, she is being extremely badly behaved; tho there are a lot of rumours going about her suing that are obviously made up by certain people in order to make her look bad. It's no fun feeling as tho you're in front of a firing squad, and I doubt that Perez would act any better if he was in the same position, no matter what he says.

Look above, apparently there was more to her statements than simple religious beliefs. She's apparently a part of a church that spouts the research of a discredited scientist and hate group member as the truth, knowing that it was skewed and homophobic in nature.

I could respect her position until that point, but now I don't feel like I can sit back. Disagreeing with it based on your religious views is just fine, but using bad science to encourage hate is wrong. She is encouraging hate by suggesting these untruths about homosexuals.

I don't want her burned at the stake, but they certainly need to change their attitude about her with these revelations. Clearly she's not motivated by her religion, she's motivated by faulty church science done by a known homophobe and hate group leader. I am shocked she even came out saying these things since apparently it first came to light in an interview where she apparently mentioned her church's beliefs about the homosexuality-pedophilia connection, which was confirmed on their site. I have to check if that is true and want to get the church's link up here too, but this all suddenly has been blown to epic proportions. I wonder if Perez knew about this before asking the question, knowing that it would be revealed that her beliefs are founded in hate group research.
