Default Icelicious tiny make-up advice guide - 09-03-2005, 08:31 PM

Making the most of your imperfections.
You may think of the cleft in your chin or the hook of your nose as a "flaw", but they are features that define you.
Round face. Don't try to sculpt cheekbones with make-up. Instead, line your eyes or play with lip colors.
Strong nose. It is regal and powerful and you will grow to love it. Do not try to shade your nose- it will make it look smudged with dirt.
Deep-set eyes. Don't use dark shadow- it will only recess them further. Instead line your eyes with a stroke wide enough to still be visible when your eyes are open.
Small lips. Define the full extent of your natural lip line with a lip pencil. Wear light to medium lip colors and highlight the centre of your lip.
Delicate features. Choose soft make-up in pastel tones- apricots and baby pinks. Think Mia Farrow or Kate Moss.
Pale skin. Embrace your paleness and stop wasting time with bronzers.
Freckles. They're a sign of youth, so don't try to cover them up. Go for pink rather than orange lip colors.

Avoid common mistakes.
Eyeliner. Lining only the outside half of the eye has a minimising effect. Be sure to apply color all the way from inside corner of the eye, along the entire lash line to the outer corner.
Blusher. Avoid shades that are too brigh, too dark or too pale, and blushes that clashes with your skin. If you have to work with it, the color isn't righr. Apply blush to the apple of your cheeks, where color naturally rises. For those with oily skin, stick to brown pressed orange with no orange pigment.
Lipstick. When you go to buy lipstick, don't wear make-up, so you are looking at the true color of your skin and lips. Try not to test it at your hand- it's nothing like yor lip shade.

Concealer revealed.
If you have only 30 seconds to spare, concealer is the one thing you should not skip. Here's how to get it right...
A bad concealer is white, pink, chalky, dry or greasy- these actually highlight flaws.
A good concealer is smooth, creamy, yellow-toned. It blends easily into your skin and makes you look instantly better and brighter.
The test. feel the concealer between your finger. Does it feel powdery, sticky, thin or greasy? If so, it's not a good one- keep looking.
Stubborn stains.
1. Concealer is not meant for spots or blemishes- it's purpose is to coer dark circles under hte eyes. The right shade of concealer is a shade lighter than your skin, so it will just make a blemish stand out more. Use foundation on spots.
2. For birthmarks, sun spots and age spots, you will probably need a combination of concealer and foundation in one or two shades.
3. Bruises or purply green circles need a concealer that's a bit pink. Use a pale yellow powder over the top.

Perfect eyeliner.
1. Good eyeliner isn't a rush job. If you're a novice, use a pencil for better control. Make a series of dots along your lash line, then join them carefully and smudge with a pointed cotton bud. Here the Body Shop Line Softener can be used.
2. If you're going for full eye make-up, curl your lashes before using eyeliner to minimise smudges. Mascara should still be applied after.
3. Soften a too-hard pencil with a quick, warm blast of your hairdryer.
4. Liquid eyeliner is best done in one sweep. Rest your elbow for a steady hand, then look down into a mirror laid flat on your table. With the other hand, push your brow up and outward, then in one motion, line all the way across.
5. If you have close-set eyes, you should thicken your eyeliner at the outer corners to "pull" the eyes apart, and if they are wide-set do the same on the inner corners. Narrow large eyes with black liner on the inside rim of the lid and under the eye. For small eyes stick to a clean line above the lashes.
6. You can also turn your favorite eyeshadow color into liner with a little water and a skinny brush, but dust face powder under your eye first to catch any falling shadow. Sweep away the powder and shadow with a brush when finished.
7. For under eyes, hold pencil upright with the tip touchig lashes. Press and roll outwards for a soft, smudged effect.

Lipstick textures.
1. The warmer the lipstick, the softer the tube, and the more color you'll get in one swipe. A cooler stick is harder to apply, but good for precision.
2. Lipsticks labelled "moisturizing" won't last as long, but "long-lasting" lipsticks can be drying.
3. Try shimmer lipstics before you buy- they often have dry textures.
4. Lipsticks should be about color first, then texture. You can make a matte lipstick more glossy with a dab of lipgloss, or a glossy lipstick more matte with powder.

Lip pencils: To line or not to line?
Applying a lipliner before your ipstick is the best way to give oyur color staying power. Lipstick adheres better to a dry surface like lipliner than to bare, moist lips. If you want to create the illusion of larger lips, a liner is the most effective way. But only use one if you are very skilled (and steady-handed). Fill the fuller side first, then correct hte thinner side to match. Alternatively, plump up your lips with creamier or even glossier shades of lipstick. Lips have two liplines. The pinky tone of the lips and the whiter lip edge. If your lips are large, don't apply color outside the pinky tone. If they're thinner, take color on the whiter edge. To complete the look, also line lips after applying lipstick. If you have uneven lips, only use liner on the bottom lip for better definition.

8 steps to the perfect pout.
1. Once a week, brush a wet toothbrush over your lips to remove any dry skin.
2. Cover your lips with an oil-free concealer to neutralise your lip color.
3. Apply a neutral lipliner over the whole lip area to help seal your lipstick.
4. With a steady hand, line any outlines that need defining.
5. Apply lipstick, using a brush for precisin nd a sharper outline. If you prefer applying straight from the tube, start at the bow of your lips, do each side, then the bottom lip in one sweep.
6. Blot your lips with a tissue to remove any excess lipstick.
7. Repeat the application.
8. For longevity, lightly powder your lips after application. For fuller lips or a glossier finish, apply a touch of gloss in the center. But be careful not t overdo it, lipstick should never look too reflective.

Lipstick colors.
The Berries. Deep plums are always a trend come winter- good news, as they flatter most skin tones. Team with glossy gold eyeshadow.
The Neutrals. The best neutral lipsticks are not too matte, not too glossy, have a dusky pink base color and a soft, creamy texture. Get those four right and you're laughing.
The Reds. No tow red lipstick shades are the same. Cool complexions need a pink-based shade; if you're warm-skinned, use an orangey-red; and try a bright, glossy red if you want to stop traffic.
The Pinks. Pink lipsticks sometimes gets bad press but, for perking up a dull complexion and making you look pretty, there's nothing better. The secret of choosing? Just pick the one you love the most.

For those of you that have reached your 20s, keep you skin sheer and transparent, but experience with color for eyes, lips and cheeks. This is the time to discover who you are and who you want to be.

I can see what you mean, but with my almond shaped eyes and terribly annoying lashes, I think it looks rather good. lining the entire eye makes my eyes stand out too much...since they are already the most noticable feature on my face.

Hey, thanks , that's really good advice ^_^. Can you help me with something???? Well, my eyes are on the small side but no too small. I want to know how to line them properly also how can I make that "smokey" eye effect???? Some people say to eyeline the inside and outside of your eye ( I meant like the inner eye, I don't know how to explain it). If you couldl help me I would be very happy.

For LaLa_09:
As one may or may not know, eyeliners are always a great way to help make the eyes appear larger. You can place white eyeliner on the inside of your lower lid as this helps your eye size appear larger. Outline the eyes with eyeliner above the upper lashes and below the lower lashes (here you can use softer toned colors like gray or brown). Outline the inside corner of the eyes with a white shadow or pencil. Use light colors on the lid and be sure to highlight the outer brow bone area.

Dark browns/black and the smoky eyes look work well. Have the dark colors on the outer of your eye. Leave the inner eye natural, or pencil it in with light, natural eyeliner.

Eye Shadow
Eye shadow is meant to highlight and define the eyes. Eye shadow is used to create depth to bring out the beauty of the eyes. A dark color used on the lid will make the eye appear smaller, while a lighter color will make it appear larger. Use eye shadow to give your eyes the smoldering look or the funky party look. Eye shadows can come as creams, pressed powders or sticks. The pressed powder variety is most popularly used. A straight bristled brush is used for each eye shadow color. Another brush needs to be used for the blending. A basic shade is used for the eyelids whereas a highlighting shade is used to highlight the brow bone area. Identify your eye shape and follow the suitable eye make up tip.

Small eyes - Don't use too much shadow or liner, as it will make your eyes look smaller. Apply a light color on eyelid, use a darker color in the crease and use a highlighter under the brow.

Large eyes - Wear darker shadow on the lid and extend it to the crease. Use a flat color under the brow to highlight.

Wide-set eyes - Use darker colors on the inner corners of the eye.

Round eyes - Make round eyes appear longer by using color all around and extending toward the outer corners.

When choosing the color for your eye shadow makeup, keep in mind your eye color. Black eye shadow mixed with a bright blue can give your eyes a smoky effect. Green or hazel eyes go well with browns, plums, apricot and forest green eye shadows. Copper, bronze, champagne or beige help in accentuating brown eyes. You must also take into account the color of your skin and dress while applying eye makeup.

Eyeliners
Eyeliners are popularly used by women to give an illusion of large eyes. Liners are applied to the tops of the eyelids and even under the lower lashes. Eyeliners come in various colors as liquids or pencils. Pencils are available in many colors and can be sharpened for a fine line. Liquid eyeliners that are alcohol based are waterproof. The liners are applied on the upper lids close to the lash line. You need to apply the liner beginning with the inner corner of the eye and moving to the outer corner. Eye pencils are used to add a hint of color to the area under the lower lashes. This is to be done subtly so that there is no hard and thick line.

Mascara
Mascara accentuates the eye while thickening and darkening the lashes. Perfectly made up eyes are set off by long and curling lashes that add to the overall alluring effect. You can choose from waterproof or smudge-proof mascaras. Water based mascaras can be easily applied and removed. You can use mascara along with an eyelash curler. Mascara should be applied by rolling the wand from root to tip of the lashes in an upward movement. Care should be taken not to clump the eyelashes together. You can apply a little powder to the lashes to allow the mascara to coat evenly.

How to apply eye make up
Eye makeup can work magic. It can make your eye look large or small and can even alter wide set eyes and give you the much-needed allure.

Eye Shadow - Blend a deep shade of eye shadow to give the impression of depth. Highlight the brow bone with a lighter shade to give a wide eyed look. Deep sooty tones work well to provide definition whereas pale shades go a long way in emphasizing.

Eye Liner - Keep the liner light and even. You can use a cotton bud to smudge a little liner and achieve an exotic look. The liner can be applied with a lighter line on the inner eye and thickening as it goes outward to offset the effect of close-set eyes. The right application of eye liner makeup can create the effect of more expressive eyes.

Fake Eyelashes
You can resort to fake eyelashes to add to the effect. You must apply the fake eyelashes with care. The eyelashes must be dipped in glue and placed as close to the baseline of your own eyelashes and allowed to set. Then you can skillfully use dark eyeliner and mascara to blend them.

Eye Make up Remover
Always remove eye makeup thoroughly before going to bed. This will keep lashes healthier and prevent any mascara from getting into your eyes during the night. There are many readymade eye make up removers available in the market for this purpose. They come in several forms ranging from eye lotions to eye pads. While removing the mascara, avoid the color from going onto the delicate area below the bottom lashes. Roll a cotton bud dipped in a cosmetic cleanser over the lashes, taking the mascara down onto the tissue. Repeat till all the mascara is gone. Warm olive oil serves the purpose of removing the eye make up as well as conditioning the lashes. Other popular alternatives for removal of eye make up are baby shampoo, Vaseline and witch hazel.

Eye make up tip
When your eye pencils are too soft, refrigerate them. You can soften a hard eye pencil by holding it between your fingers.

1. An important eye makeup tip is to apply eye make up in a well-lit area.

2. Light colored eye shadow is best for a professional look. Different colors can be blended and used for the evening out.

3. Eyeliner and mascara should be applied after the eye shadow has been correctly applied. Two thin applications of mascara work well.

4. Well-trimmed eyebrows go a long way in giving a neat and clear area for your eye make up application.

I'm not sure pencils are easier than eyeliner... depends on habits...

Agreed there; altho my makeup look is half glam rock and half gothic. It wouldn't work for everyone, but it works for me.
