Ammit appeared immediately. While pictures of her on tomb walls made her look awkward, like a handful of children's toys ripped apart and pieced together again at random, the real thing looked graceful, lean, supple, and powerful.
Ammit had the head of a crocodile, but her red eyes were as intelligent as any human's. Despite the fact that she was female, she had a mane of reddish-brown hair, similar to a lion, but neater, as it was combed out and shining. Her forelegs and beginning of her chest was the lean but muscular body of a lion, but te golden fur gradually faded away toward her rear, revealing purplish skin underneath and the roundish rump and chubby but powerful hind legs of a hippopotamus.
Ammit and Anubis were alike in certain ways; and, in this task, she had a wordless understanding with him. He'd called, and there were two guilty hearts before her. She rightly assumed that these souls needed devouring, and she did so quickly and efficiently; she took no joy in being cruel, though she did enjoy the taste of hearts and feel of the souls' energies flowing into her to be absorbed.
