Star smiled at Rose. "Don't worry," she said. "You're exactly on time. You can start work straight away; my grandson is supposed to be in but as usual, he's late. If he does turn up, you can let him in for me. I need to make a phone call but I won't be long."
Star indicated some dirty test tubes and beakers that were piled next to the sink. "Could you make a start on cleaning those for me while I make my call?"
Arkady waited impatiently for the Grand Master to give him his money. Once he had it, he tucked it carefully away in his wallet and put the wallet in his trouser pocket. He then opened the door and left the office. Arkady was very fond of money; he and his mother had grown up in poverty and sometimes hadn't even had enough to eat. Since he was small he had dreamed of having lots of money, and this dream was still with him, and was one of the reasons why he had taken this job.
