Leaving Alistair was pretty tough for me the first time as well, seeing as my character was in a relationship with him and everything. But I thought having Loghain in my party was a really interesting possibility (I hadn't previously considered that we'd even be given the option to spare him), so I decided to finish the game like this, and oddly enough I started to really like him as a character.
