Bethany was at the water park with her mother; however, as her mother couldn't swim too well, Beth couldn't go too far despite the fact that there were lifeguards around. So, the deaf girl just lazed around in a ring, kicking her toes in the water and keeping her head partially submerged, upside down. While she ended up with water in her ears, it was a lot less annoying than having her head above water in silence. At least under the surface, she could nearly hear something.
Somebody grabbed her foot, and she yanked her head up, shaking her head hard to get the water out, and she gave her mother a blank look with her head tilted. Aurora tapped the side of her head, asking 'What are you thinking about now?' Bethany just tapped her first three fingers against her thumb - 'Nothing.'
It was far from nothing, she thought as she let her head lay back in the water. Why had that guy from school followed her? She was pretty sure he didn't live in the neighborhood, did he?
Far, far beyond the island, we dwelt in shades of twilight, through dread and weary days, through grief and endless pain. It lies unknown, the land of mine!
