Default The Dos and Don'ts of Beach Style - 06-10-2009, 06:45 AM

This is a guide to looking good on the beach, as well as a few tips to ensure your holiday goes well.

DO Wear a swimsuit that fits your shape. If you have a muffin top, don't force yourself into a bikini; all that will do is accentuate it. Either wear a one piece, or if you absolutely have to wear a two piece, pick a tankini instead as it's far more flattering.

DO Ensure everything is secure. If you do wear a bikini, make sure that the straps are securely tied before you go into the sea. You don't want to end up like a friend of mine who lost her bikini top when a wave crashed over her. She ended up trapped in the sea til someone could throw her a towel. If you plan to swim or paddle, then make sure you're not just wearing a flimsy, sunbathing costume. Pick one that's all purpose. And for goodness sake, don't choose a white one; white costumes go see thru when wet! O_o

DO Wear a sarong. This summer, bold prints are in, so a kaftan or sarong in a bold print is right on trend, and you can cover up in style. Plus, sarongs can be worn all over, either round the hips or accross your body, so you can wear it to suit you.

DON'T Cake your face in makeup. It will streak and run when you sweat; and streaked cheeks with panda eyes do not look good on anyone. Go natural; if you absolutely must put some on, then slick on some waterproof mascara and eyeliner, with a coloured lip gloss. That is all you need for the beach.

DON'T Bake yourself in the sun. If the moment you hit the beach, you throw on your swimsuit and roast yourself, you will end up badly sunburned or in a worst case scenario, with sunstroke. The boiled lobster look or peeling banana look is not going to turn heads, save in horror. Cover yourself in sunscreen, and don't stay in the sun for longer than an hour. Sit in the shade the rest of the time, and avoid the noon sun. If you want a tan, then fake it; it's much safer.

DON'T Wear stilettos. In fact, heels of any kind don't work on sand; all you will do is end up falling flat on your face, which is never a good look. Get yourself a pair of flipflops or flat sandals for the beach; there are loads of different ones in the shops that will suit every taste. You can sling on a pair of heels when you go out in the evening.
