Have you ever watched those fashion shows that do a complete style makeover on someone? Iíll admit I love them. I love to see fashion experts ripping into people, letting them know once and for all that pleats are a bad thing and a great purse is a must-have. Now, Iím not mean-spirited, by any means. I also love to watch the shows because everyone looks so happy at the end of them Ė a total life transformation and all that.

My Secret

Of course, my real secret for watching the fashion shows about real people is because I want to get advice from the fashion experts. I watch and I wait for the one episode that has someone with a body and hair like mine. Then I lap up the advice as if it were being given directly to me. Dark jeans? Check. Emphasize narrow waist? Check.

Fashion Dos and Doníts

It makes me wonder though how we used to make ourselves look good before Stacey, Clinton and all the other style experts came around to show us how it was done. Of course there are fashion magazines. These are only helpful in small batches though as they have to cover every shape in every issue. You know what I mean Ė find the perfect jeans for your body or whatever.

Some people just seem to have a gift for style. They can walk into a thrift store and pull together a cool and funky look that goes perfectly together and fits them like a dream. Iíll admit Iím the one who just buys a t-shirt because Iím terrified of how Iíd look in retro-anything. Regardless, it seems like every time I watch a new episode I learn something new. Do you already know all these little pointers?

Avoid Pleated Pants Ė Pleated pants are something your grandfather might wear if he didnít know they make everyone look really weird Ė wide hips and triangular legs.

Skip Skinny Jeans Ė Unless your legs really are very tall and skinny, you donít need skinny jeans. The 1% of the population than can wear them look great. The rest of us seem to have oddly shaped legs that are much shorter than they are in real life, especially if you tuck your skinny jeans into big boots.

Ultra Low Rise Pants Are Probably a No Ė Not only do ultra low rise pants give everyone a full thong shot if you bend down an inch, they also make your legs look really short, especially with flat shoes like ballet slippers or flip flops.

Blackís Not Slimming Ė This is a rule for older folks, for the most part, but black is not really slimming unless you wear it correctly. A black jacket that fits you correctly can make you look trimmer, as can well fitting black pants. But head to toe black is just goth or emo.

Skim the Body, Donít Stick to It Ė Clothes should skim the body, not bond to it as they were pasted on. You can show your shape without showing every inch of it through your shirt and pants.

I honestly feel much happier when wearing what I like that when wearing what looks good on me.

As well as, many of the things you mentioned here only depend on preference. Maybe some people want their legs to look stubby?

I, myself, find that just about anyone looks good in skinny jeans. In my opinion, 1% should be 70%.

How you're dressed is the first impression you give people, alot of you young kids are too dumb to realize it yet but you will get turned down for jobs/promotions/etc because you don't look the part or dress professionally enough, and how you're dressed often tells an employer a lot about you, sometimes TOO MUCH.

The majority of these shows, you'll notice, focus mainly on people who are dressing inappropriately for the work place or their age.

I'll have you know I don't give a flip about what people might think about the clothes I wear. What's wrong with dressing completely wrong and go out and having people stare?

Well, on the other hand, this could be a good article if you care what's 'in'.

i wear head to toe black ALL the time and im not emo or goth! im the complete opposite! i think you should edit that because wearing head to toe black can some times look very nice. for example: my black paramore shirt and black denim jeans look wicked cute!

A black jacket that fits you correctly can make you look trimmer, as can well fitting black pants. But head to toe black is just goth or emo.

Is very insulting. Just because you wear all black has nothing to do with what someone labels you as! This is why people get angry at articles such as.

If your going to give tips don't insult someone's style. If you decided to dress in all black one day would you want to be called goth or emo?

And my thoughts on the rest. You can wear what you want as long as you feel comfortable in it.

Most people know these rules by now. But how about "Don't wear those furry boots because they make your calves look fat, they are pointless on slippery surfaces, and they make your feet stink?" Living where I do, it's essential to find decent snow boots, and those are just horrible.

Wide horizontal sripes do indeed make you look wider, not fatter. I wore them once and took them off immediatlybcause I looked like an elephant.

I love my skinny jeans in the winter with an empire wait- lined shirt.

I love plaided pants!

And I like horizontal stripes too, the whole 'they make you look fat' thing is exaggerated.

Oh okay, I read your rant and now I know why you're upset...BUT

She's talking about clothing, not their actual personality... just like if I were to wear big red sho.es with a multi-colored curly wig people would say I was dressed like a clown. They're not saying "Oh She's a Clown! She must be stupid but slightly amusing!" they're just saying I'm dressed in the attire of a clown.

You're perfectly in bounds to say that lables are bad, because that's your opinion, but that's not what the writer was getting at.

Once again you have brought your drama... she's talking about the "look" not the actual people. You did say one thing I agree with though and that's: if you stay true to who you are and are not too revealing then you'll be pretty no matter what your style.

Another good rule is no large horizontal stripes! It makes skinny people look fatter too!
