Flipping channels, I couldn’t help but notice that the Disney Channel was gearing up for something big. The next big thing in Disney movies appears to be Camp Rock, which just might be as big as High School Musical. I was intrigued enough by the concept and the characters (the Jonas Brothers are involved) to record it and play it back when I got a chance. I must say, I was rather impressed by the music – one song even gave me goose bumps. Overall, it was worth a weekday evening.

*Warning! This review contains spoilers!

Mitchie Torres has always wanted to be a musician, and she can’t wait to spend a summer at Camp Rock – the It Place to be for aspiring musicians. Unfortunately, her family can’t afford the camp, until her mother takes a gig as the camp cook. Mitchie gets to go to camp, but she has to help in the kitchen. Mitchie doesn’t care a bit, however, as she is getting her dream summer.

Once she arrives, Mitchie learns there is more to camp than just music. There is a definite hierarchy of who’s-who at camp, and the cook’s daughter isn’t going to get top billing. So Mitchie invents a new parentage for herself, one that gets her in the good graces of Miss Popular, Tess Tyler. Mitchie groups up with Tess and her friends and has to work hard to keep her real mom a secret.

In the meantime, Mitchie takes classes in music, voice and hip-hop dance taught by none other than Joe Jonas who plays Shane Gray. Despite Shane/Joe’s rock star jerkiness, the two become friends and discuss music together – although Mitchie doesn’t realize Shane’s heard her sing. And Shane doesn’t realize it was Mitchie he heard singing.

Shane starts to get interested in his own style of music again and starts looking for the girl he heard singing, but Mitchie is rolled up in controversy of her own. Tess has discovered her secret and tells the entire camp about Mitchie’s mother being the cook of the camp. Shunned by her popular friends, Mitchie starts hanging out with real friends again.?

Tess isn’t done with her tricks and get Mitchie banned from Final Jam, the big concert at the end of the summer. Tess gets a bit of her own medicine, however when her two friends and back-up singers walk out and wind up doing their own things at Final Jam. Despite being banned, Mitchie makes it to Final Jam anyway where she wows the audience and Shane – who discovers she was who he was looking for all along. You even wind up liking Tess who is also shunned by her own famous mother throughout the movie and winds up learning an important life lesson in the end.

My Thoughts

I’ll admit that there are parts where I struggle with the acting. This is probably not going to win anyone an Academy Award, but certain actors really shine in parts of this – including Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato, the main characters. The plot was interesting enough if slightly predictable. But I always like a bit of predictable in my Disney movies, so that wasn’t a turn off.

What I really liked was the music. There was a wide variety of music in this movie and almost all of it was really well done. At the Final Jam, I actually got goose bumps when Peggy, played by Jasmine Richards sings “Here I Am.” I want every girl in the world to stand up and sing that particular song. I also really liked the duet between Shane and Mitchie – every time I heard it. There are pieces of it throughout the movie as they get closer to finding each other.

All in all, I enjoyed it. I even watched it again just to hear the songs one more time.

i thought the movie was cute.... and joe looked very cute as well!!! but as far as the real plot was concerned, i thought it was pretty sucky. and no offence to any jonas brother fans out there, but i thouhgt joe did a really bad job playing shane gray. and demi levato wasnt that impressive either. plus the songs were kinda cookie cutter for me, and "here i am" really bored me. i thouhgt the movie wasnt that good over all.

I myself don't like Disney Channel movies. They're predictable, and don't center around real stuff, although they think they do. They're all lies.

I think that Camp Rock is just another Hannah Montana, or High School Musical. Overrated and stupid.

The Jonas Brothers are NOT that great, despite popular belief, and I really dislike that Brittany chick.

They even ruined Allison Stoner for me.

Tsk, tsk. I detest Disney now.
