Okay, so make-up doesn’t really have many rules, but for those just starting on the cosmetic journey here are a few guidelines, or maybe just thoughts that might help you along the way. Realize of course, that I’m not your mother nor would I want to be – just kidding! This is just advice passed from one girl to another.

Make-up Enhances

Make-up, especially at our age, is there to enhance natural beauty – not make you look like someone new. A bit of dark mascara makes eyelashes darker and makes your eyes stand out. False eyelashes are a bit over the top – unless you’re into costumes. Choose a foundation and powder that are light and feel more like a lotion than a cream. You have no wrinkles, so you don’t need to worry about filling in lines, just blend on top of your already smooth skin to make a fresh palette. A light dusting of powder for shine control on top of a blended foundation, and you’re in business.

Stick to Natural Colors

Someday when you’re ready for the red carpet you can bust out your heavy duty smoky eyes, but for now you would do well to stick to natural colors. I know sometimes trends make us wear green or blue eye shadow (or both), and go ahead if you like trends. But if you’re still trying to figure out how to get started, you can’t go wrong with a light brown or gray shadow. You can actually skip shadow all together if you want and go with just dark brown mascara instead.

Lipsticks are a fun way to experiment, but the easiest way to get some color and shine on your lips is the good old lip gloss. Pick a pretty peach or pink shade of gloss, apply without liner and you’re done. One thing you should put on that many girls our age skip is blush. Just a quick swipe of a pretty pink or peach blush up each cheek will give you a bit of color and life and keep you from looking so sallow and pale, unless you’re going for a pale look (Hi, Goths!)

What Goes On…

Must come off! Never go to bed with make-up on your face. There is nothing worse for your pores and skin than sleeping in make-up. In fact, you should wash your face at the end of every day whether you used make-up or not. That keeps all the oil and dirt out of your pores, not to mention make-up particles, which will help you steer clear of break-outs. If you have oily skin, a mild cleanser in the morning can help cut down on shine, but most of us just need a splash of cool water on our clean morning faces before we begin applying our make-up.

The Routine

For those who like a solid routine to follow, here’s a sample to go by:

Rinse face with water in the morning and dry.
Apply a moisturizer with sunscreen every morning
Apply a very little bit of foundation and blend it very well into your hairline and chin line.
Dust powder over your nose, forehead and chin to cut shine. Dust away any excess.
Use a different brush to put on a light swipe of pink blush on either check. Smile when you do this to find the part of the cheek you should use.
Use a natural colored eye shadow if you want shadow.
Use a dark brown eye shadow on your top and bottom lashes. Be sure to apply starting at the roots to avoid light then dark lashes.
Put on a bit of lip gloss – no need to blot.
Head out with a smile on your face!

I already knew all of this stuff .

I love make-up .

but I hate when people ether look like a clown with it on or when they were there foundation to dark .

(it makes them look orange)

And fake eyelashs .

I love them .

There not to over the top actully but if they aren't black or if they are but they have studs are junk on them it looks kind of bad if your dressing casual .

TDP should do a topic on the difference between scenesters and emos .

and then also about how lables are so offending to people .

that'd be chill .

(:

6th ? to comment .

(:

thanks for all the wounderful topics .

Good tips. If your into make-up that is. I'm not really. I don't like it, it makes me feel like a different person.. Well actually I like to wear heavy eye-liner sometimes.. but thats it.

If i was going to wear make up, I'd go for the wild look. No matter how "natural" the make-up looks, it's not really your "natrual" looks, so why not go for something freaky looking?

Yes, I know. I'm a very opinionated person.

My god. I had a dress rehearsal for a play last night and the person who was doing make up put eye shadow and eye glitter on everyone (even people who shouldn't have had it for their character). It looked really good until you added the heavy blush, lipstick, and then wrinkle lines for me (playing old character). So, I had a lot of goop to wash off my face when I got home.

Awesome article!

Natural is good. I'm only twelve, but I do theatre and I have to wear make-up for shows.

I realize, however, that the amount of make-up for shows is exaggerated, and I would never wear that much make-up anyway. I go for a bit of mascara and a light brown eyeshadow.

Well great tips. Hopefully SOME people will put it to good use.

Oooohhh, very nice tips there. And yes, natural is completely and totally better. I always hate seeing girls (especially younger ones, even 12 years old or so) with tons of eye liner and mascara and lip gloss smeared everywhere...It looks terrible! Natural is the way to go, in my opinion.

Wonderful article!
