Mermaids are much more than singing sprites of the sea. They have a dark past created and retold by terrified sailors. We all know the cute red haired mermaid and her pet fish, but what of mermaids who want to crush the life out of men and trick them into death? Who are the real mermaids among us – evil creatures? Or just beings who are sorely misunderstood?

Mermaids and Love

There are many tales of mermaids and love. The movie we know and love is probably the best example of a mermaid love story, but there are others. Some mermaids use their swimming and knowledge to help a sailor they’ve fallen in love with. Sometimes, that love doesn’t work out so well.

Many mermaids have been known to fall in love with sailors and in their passion, carry the sailors down to their underwater homes. Of course, despite the mermaids’ good intentions, sailors can’t breathe underwater and die. The mermaids would be devastated by the loss, and would keep trying to find a love to stay with them on the bottom of the sea (without much success.)

Other times, mermaids were so desperately in love with a man, they would embrace him with their full strength. Unfortunately for the man, mermaids have a great deal of strength, and the power of the embrace would squeeze the life out of him. Again, the mermaid would be deeply saddened by the state of affairs. After all, she did just accidentally kill her love (again.)

Mermaids and Anger

A mermaid in love is a very dangerous creature, but a mermaid in a rage is even worse. Some mermaids are angry with humans for any number of reasons. Some are just spiteful and want to cause mischief. Others are enraged at the site of a human presence and want to punish the sailors in their midst.

Some mermaids capture men from their boats or especially if they fall into the water and take them down into the depths. This kills the men of course, but this time the death wasn’t caused by romance – it was spite. There are tales of other mermaids who trick sailors into crashing their ships on the rocks and killing many members of the crew.

Still other tales have mermaids playing a double role. A mermaid will rise out of the depths and question sailors on board a ship. If she likes the response to her question, she’ll let the boat pass or even help it on its way. But if she doesn’t like the answer – even if it’s the truth- she’ll fly into a rage, destroy the ship or give the sailors false information to trick them into destroying their own ship.

Mermaids Misunderstood?

So are mermaids loving creatures? It would seem that many mermaids are indeed romantic and loving. But the power of that love is too much for mere mortals and the mermaids usually kill the objects of their affections. Other mermaids are vicious and cruel, but that is the nature of things. Just as many humans are loving, but can still cause bad things to happen with the best of intentions and others seem to hate the world, mermaids are just as diverse. One thing is sure, however. If a mermaid ever falls in love with you – run or swim as fast as you can in the other direction. It’s a matter of life and death.

there's another tale where if a mermaid heard something caled by name, she'd demand to have it, and if she didn't get it, she'd captize the ship, so sailors would have to rename themselves things like hammer and toast. seriously. toast.
