Have you ever read your school handbook? I did the other day (still not sure why) and noticed something interesting. If I’m caught cheating, I’ll get a zero and can be expelled or sent to alternative educational facilities. Is it just me or does that seem like a pretty serious consequence to cheating? The zero I understand, but kicked out for jotting some notes on the side of the desk before the test? Is that really even cheating?

What’s Cheating?

Reading about cheating made me want to research it. If you can be expelled for cheating the same as you would for bringing a weapon to school, cheating must be pretty bad. But what actually constitutes cheating anyway? I guess the cheating that springs to mind is hiding answers to a quiz on your hand, your phone, or the corner of your desk while you are taking it. So rather than learn the material, you are able to get a good grade by “helping” yourself along.

Cheating is Against the Rules – Right?

So obviously cheating is against the rules. The teacher says no cheating, so you can’t cheat. But what if the teacher doesn’t mean it? Sometimes I know a teacher is watching someone in the classroom cheat. I’ve seen one just sit there amused while another student snuck out his calculator to check his work on a test.

If cheating is so terrible, shouldn’t the teacher have collected the test, calculator and student and whisked them away to the office for swift punishment? That didn’t happen. The teacher accepted the paper from the kid and a few days later, the cheater earned his A without the teacher ever saying a thing. So was that cheating?

Is it Cheating?

Here are a few more cheating scenarios to think about:

- You can use a calculator on your final, but not on regular tests in math. If you can use it one the big test, why shouldn’t you use a calculator on all tests? Very logical if you ask me, and possibly why I see so many cell phone calculators out secretly the day of the test. I should mention that my phone is not among the others since I’m too chicken (and maybe even too ethical) to even try to cheat a little.

- You make flashcards to help you study for vocabulary. You work hard to memorize the cards, but struggle with a word or two. What happens if you just keep the flashcards by your desk discretely flipping through while taking the quiz? After all, when will you ever have to use memorized words and spelling in real life (besides all the time!)?

- Your teacher lets you make a note card with formulas for this test. You create a wonderful card and then pull it out again for the next test, too. If you made a “cheat sheet” with permission, can you use it on other tests and quizzes, too? Should you just add a few new formulas every time you come across one for the next big test?

- If your friend happens to whisper answers in your direction and you accidentally hear what she is saying, are you cheating? You didn’t ask for help, but it was provided. Is having one crazy friend enough to get you kicked out of school? In some areas it may very well be!

Once I was finishing up taking a test and this guy whispered me one of the answers but I didn't write them down and wrote what I would have wrote instead.

I did this because I would have wanted to get a bad grade HONESTLY instead of lying and cheating. I felt PROUD that I didn't cheat and when I get good grades I know it my doing and that I worked hard to EARN that grade.

There was always at least one boy sitting next to me in class throuout intermediate school. I remember in 3rd grade once when one of those boys accused me of cheating off of a science test (when I was really looking at the white board at the front of the room to read the instructions). Well, that sent me to the corner of the room alone. Everybody stared and giggled. I wanted to shoot him!!!!! :flamethr o : eviltongu

I never even looked at that evil boy again.

I see what you mean, and I understand. I feel that any type of cheating is wrong. I can't even describe to you my anger about this...I guess it affects me more than others. Perhaps I was brought up differently...my school has very uptight rules about cheating. Such has probably given me a different opinion than others...

I feel that people should not be given credit for what they haven't done. Even if it is a pop quiz, you shouldn't cheat. A pop quiz is to test you on the knowledge you received from homework, reading, etc. You should have done the work, you know? It takes from deserving people who work hard, but their work then benefits those who don't work....then those who don't get good grades, get into college...it might even take it away from someone who did the work...

Anyway, I'm fighting for something i'll lose. Go ahead and cheat, if you must...don't listen to someone trying to help.

*sigh*

ok kitkat2, i get were your coming from and everything, and i can see why this would upset you, but seriously, cheating is not anything like murdering. its one thing if you're like, cheating on your job and get fired, but on a pop quiz? come on. and Jessica is just saying that she doesn't think that certain aspects are cheating. she isn't saying that cheating isn't wrong! i'm not trying to start a fight here, so please don't take this the wrong way! i just wanted to make it clear that Jessica is NOT saying that cheating is not a serious offense.

if you don't get caught, it's not bad....

well, let's say a murderer was never caught. Would that make the murder all right?

Of course not.

This is all very disappointing....please, Jessica, I ask you in all sincerity and respect to take this article down. It is contradicting the morals of not only this website, but of the human race. It is telling young children and adults to slack off, not do their work, and mooch off of people who really care and do the work.

Cheating is wrong, wrong, WRONG! UGH!! None of you seem to see what I am trying to say.

I am so angry about this. I am very, VERY ANGRY. I can only wish the majority would agree.

I frown at this. Really, what has this generation come to?

Please, please, Jessica! I respect you, I honestly do, but this article is sending the absolute wrong messages to YOUNG children!

I am sorry.

With all due respect,

Kat

Cheating is a form of lying. I hate lying. Thus, I don't cheat. I cheated once on my math homework. (Actuelly, I said it was done, when it wasn't *blush*) I got in so much trouble, I was grounded for almost a month. Moral of this story: DON'T CHEAT!
