When the weather outside is frightful, the inside can be extra delightful. A snow
day is a terrific bonus Ė when your school declares a snow day, you can put that homework away for another night and focus on staying warm inside while you have just a bit of fun. Hereís the best way to survive a snow day:
Go Back to Bed
Most kids donít get enough sleep. If you woke up early for school only to find it isnít in session, turn around and head right back upstairs. Turn on an electric blanket, throw your pajamas back on and climb into your blessed cocoon of warmth. Even if you donít actually fall asleep laying in all that warmth will feel luxurious, and you can give your brain a chance to rest from all that learning youíve been doing lately.
Try the Computer
When youíve had enough rest, throw on your robe and slippers and try the computer. Donít be surprised though if the internet is down or slow due to the weather. Chat with friends online and take the time to comment on your favorite blogs. Take care of all the little things youíve been meaning to do but havenít had the time. This is a free day, so there is no obligation to finish your research paper Ė unless you were supposed to finish it last night.
Snuggle Up and Read
Head over to the fireplace with a warm blanket and a good book or magazine. If the power is off or flickering, you might get frustrated trying to watch television or play online. Take this opportunity to sit by a crackling fire (or just on the couch) with a mug of hot cocoa while you read. This is the kind of day you can start and finish an entire book, so donít be afraid to pick something youíve been waiting to read or the magazine thatís been sitting on your desk for two weeks thanks to all of your homework.
If itís safe, bundle up in your coat, gloves and hat to have an outside adventure. Itís most likely not safe to drive, but all that snow might make a great snowman. If youíre artistic, bring your camera or sketchbook along to try and catch inspiration from heaping mounds of white powder and trees crackling with the weight of ice. In fact, you can continue your sketch from the comfort of your home if the weather proves to be too much of an adventure.
If your mobile phone is working, get comfortable and call the friends you donít see everyday. Get caught up with the people you usually just wave to in the hallways and make plans for the weekend. If youíre really brave, you can even call your crush. Tell him staying home made you realize how much you like seeing him everyday at school and see if heíll take the bait. Who knows, you might just have yourself a new boyfriend by the time the bus comes to pick you up the next morning.
