There are countless heroes we encounter on a daily basis. Your heroes might include family members such as your mom or brother, or perhaps a celebrity. Other heroes have come into the spotlight in recent years that continue to deserve as much respect and recognition now as they did during and following September 11, 2001.

Real Heroes

Those who work to protect the rest of us Ė including our way of life, are real heroes. Itís amazing to think that the people we go to school with and see in the grocery store and malls can easily become firefighters, police officers and soldiers ready to die to help someone in need. None of these jobs are easy, despite jokes of donut shops or childrenís book of cat rescues. The jobs require training, skill, and most of all the kind of dedication most of us would have a hard time showing every day.

Firefighters

Firefighters are often the first to arrive on the scene of an accident or bad situation. This was the case on 9/11 and it is still the case today. Many firefighters were killed going upstairs in the twin towers to help others come down, and even today firefighters are still dying to protect us in California as they battle the wildfires that have devastated that area.

Firefighters might rescue the occasional kitten, but they also are trained in rescue, fire safety, and even are specialists in installing the car seats that keep babies safe and sound in the back seat of cars. Some firefighters arenít even out of high school yet. Often, as soon as you turn seventeen or eighteen, you can actually become a volunteer firefighter. If it is something that interests you, I strongly encourage you to research the requirements in your area. We always need more heroes.

Police Officers

If you drive, you might have already had a frustrating or even embarrassing encounter with your local police officer. At the time, you were probably not thinking of him as a hero, but turn on Cops one day to see what these guys really have to deal with. Sure a teenager going fifteen miles over the limit is simple to deal with, but taking out known drug dealers, capturing child pornographers and keeping the rest of us safe while we sit at home stewing over a ticket is no laughing matter.

As far as Iím concerned, if I have no idea how much a cop is doing in my neighborhood, he must be doing a great job. Cops try to prevent problems and solve current ones as quickly as possible. For every wanted poster out there, there are several, if not dozens of bad guys already caught and behind bars without the public even having a clue. Keep up the hard work, boys in blue!

Soldiers

Right now there is a war going on whether you agree with it or not. And soldiers are fighting and dying to protect the lives of now free Iraqis, people of Afghanistan and those of us possibly in danger back home. The United States is certainly not the only one fighting terrorism around the world, and soldiers of all nations and creeds are doing what they can to keep those who are not involved in warfare safe from those who are willing to go to any lengths to take a jab at a perceived enemy.

This, like any other war, has people that support it and people that oppose it. That is not the issue here, however. We all support our troops that are doing their job and their duty to keep us safe. The more angry terrorists we unearth around the world, the fewer that will be able to attack America, Great Britain, or any other targeted country in the world. It is a hard job, a dangerous one, and one that deserves a huge amount of respect.

Fantastic Article! All of these are terrific examples of heroes. A friend of mine, actually my best friend, who I've known since I was ten, joined the service after the war broke out. I am so proud to know that my best friend, who is like a brother to me, would so willingly go to the service of his country. I pray for his safety every day, but at least he gets to come home for Christmas! I'm so excited that I'm going to see him!

So, in short, yay for the soldiers, policemen, firefighters, and medical professionals who keep us all safe!

i think that those fighting to save another's life are true heros. I think that those who, say, spend their summer building schools for kids with aids or homes or those who can't afford one are heros too. And also teachers.

I think the war is good for both us and the Iraqi's. If we didnt fight them they would attack us, anywhere anytime. Think of all of those who dont know how to fight for themselves, the cripple, and countless others. Would not it be better to have few lifes go then have America slowly turn into a grave? Ah, how my heart does ache for countless people like your father and you who miss those dear to them. Thank our Lord that he is protecting us. My father was once in the military, but retired quite before I was born so I never have felt the pain you must go through. Ah, I'm off topic though. Thank the Lord we have so many people who would risk there lives for ours, quite like He did for us. Do not bang me for preaching, I will do all I can to give Him the rightfull praise He deserves.

God bless.

AWESOME article. My father is a cop and I can't stand hearing a bunch of crapheads complainign about a ticket when he risks his life for them every night. I have the same low opinion of those who disrespect soldiers.

I agree.

Although, I hate to disagree with my dear Emmypoo, but I think soldiers are heroes too. As long as they aren't the ones shooting their own men and running rougue across foreign countries.

That would be bad. Very bad.

Good article.
