Tyra Banks knows what sheís talking about when she tries to instruct a few wannabes about modeling. Tyraís lived the life so long itís just her nature. And now her show is not only informative for anyone thinking about modeling, but is fascinating to watch for the rest of us. After all, how can you not be at least mildly interested in seeing whoíll be Americaís Next Top Model?

The Show

ANTM started in 2003 and will continue until at least 2010. Every season a crop of tall, thin girls arrive and wait for Tyra to turn them into the next supermodel. Each episode of the show has the girls learn something new, demonstrate their skill in a challenge, do a photo shoot and then be judged by the real experts in the field, including Tyra.

The judging can be rather harsh at times, but thatís what the industry is all about. The pictures from the photo shoots are used to find the weakest contestants of the week.

Those two girls are then given criticism and advice from Tyra and the other judges before one is eliminated.

As the number of potential models dwindles, the girls get to go someone exciting and fashionable. This year the girls will be going to Beijing, China. There they will learn more about international modeling and how to work fashion shows. Finally, when there are only two girls left, the winner is decided after a runway show and recap of their performance thus far.

The Fashion Industry

For anyone interested in the fashion industry, ANTM is like an overview we can all understand. The industry may make pretty things, but is not pretty all the time. There is drama. There are fights. There are girls who simply donít make the cut. But above all of that is the goal. All of these contestants want to work in the fashion industry.

Americasí Next Top Model takes the girls and viewers through the life of young models. We get to experience cramped living conditions. We get to see all the kinds of modeling and skills that are expected. We get to see and understand just how much goes into those pictures we see in magazines or the work behind a stroll down the catwalk. Itís a pure fashion education.

The Models

But the most compelling part of the show for most viewers is the contestants. These girls come from all over the country hoping to land a modeling contract and learn the skills necessary to make it big in the industry. Thus far, none of the winners have actually become a ďtop model,Ē but they do win a contract and a chance to be successful.

The girls are interesting to watch mainly because of how different they all are. Sure they might all have a similar slim appearance, but their personalities and lifestyles are all over the charts. Some are laid back and easy going. OthersÖarenít. The clashes between a bunch of young women trying to live in the same small space are inevitable. Many of these girls are young and have never been away from home. Suddenly they are traveling all over the globe and meeting heavy hitters in the fashion industry. Itís been too much for some, and others have just fit right in.

You may not be interested in modeling, or you might be looking for tips to become the next Twiggy. Regardless, ANTM is fashionably entertaining, and more than a little educational.
