We’ve all heard them and we might even use them without meaning to – stereotypes. And the worst stereotypes in schools today deal with extracurricular and electives. Of course we know stereotypes are wrong, but sometimes they do seem to have a basis in reality. Other times they are just ridiculous and a little funny. They can be hurtful, but if at all possible, blow off anyone who assumes something about you just because of your hobbies.

The most common stereotypes, at least the ones I’ve seen, are funny. There is always at least one person in a group who fits the mold, so to say, but a lot of other people almost try to make the stereotype true – usually as a joke. Maybe it’s time we admit that some stereotypes should be all in good fun.

The Dumb Jocks

If jocks are really as dumb as everyone like to pretend, how can they be making so much money? You have to be savvy and smart to navigate the legal waters of professional sports, and learning rules and plays and the amount of training involved in most sports is no easy task.

Sure, not every jock is headed for the Ivy League, but that doesn’t make them dumb. After all, very few people in honors classes make it to the Ivy League. Besides with the new rules in UIL, you have to pass your classes to graduate and players at the college level are actually working toward the same degrees as regular “smart” college kids. Dumb indeed.

The Band Nerds

Why do band members have to be nerds? If they pull on a uniform and pick up a tuba, they are suddenly so uncool they must not have any friends? Has anyone seen Drumline besides me? You have to have talent to play in the band. The same can be said for choir. They don’t let you in if you can’t sing or play well.

I don’t think anyone would say that rock bands are a bunch of nerds, and you’d be surprised at how many band nerds can play multiple instruments – including the guitar. Maybe the stereotype comes from the number of band and choir kids that are in high classes and make good grades. But if making good grades is nerdy, I think I’ll proudly call myself one. At least I’ll someday be at college surrounded by all the other nerds of the world.

The Art Freaks and Drama Geeks

There are tons of other clubs and activities, but two of my favorites are artistic in nature. The art kids and drama kids always seem to be rather similar in my stereotype books. They both are moody, giddy or like to be different – usually very different. There are relatively few emo and goth jocks, but there are plenty hanging out in the art room or backstage.

If the artsy folk are a bit temperamental and expressive in their clothing and hair style, why does it make them freaky or geeky? They are practicing their craft. Nobody complains that the drama geek is too dramatic and flashy when he’s on stage. Why should we care if he wears his make-up in the classroom? Some of the world’s finest artists have been a bit unstable.

(Van Gogh cut off his own ear!), but wearing all black and moping around waiting for inspiration does not qualify an art student for Valium.

Relax people! It doesn’t matter what you do for fun – there are plenty of other people who enjoy the same thing, just look at how many people hang out here on the Doll Palace. And the best friends of all are those who can teach you all about their hobbies in exchange for knowledge about your own.

I don't know about other schools, but in my school, there are absolutely no goths backstage, and theatre "geeks" are not dramatic at all. They're simply great actors and have the ability to portray someone different. Everyone in my theatre group is really down-to earth and nice. And, it would be extremely obnoxious to wear stage-make up to class. Besides, stage-make up is so overdone so that you don't look like ghosts on stage with all the lights on you, that even if you did wear it in class, you'd look like a clown with a terrible tan. I don't see why anyone would do that.

We don't wear exotic clothing either. We dress just like everyone else and follow the same fashions. We also aren't moody or over-emotional and act to get away from that, but act to get away from the pressures of school, not psycho-path problems.

I'm sorry to be pointing fingers, but I don't think its very fair to be stereotyping in an article against stereotyping....

Singing and dancing and acting are what I live for.

Art is fun too.

I am the drama geek. I live and breathe theatre.

I am never stereotyped as one, though. It's weird. My brother always says that only g.ay guys do theatre and weird girls do theatre. So basically it's only outcasts, in his opinion.

I never have liked stereotypes.

Good article.

Yay for band/drama/art junkies (aka...all of my favorite activities)

Stereotypes are annoying, but at a lot places I can think off, the badn kids are the cool ones because we have fun. Choir too (I'm in both).

You wouldn't believe how much pressure the directors put on us to be shinig examples to all of the student body: band students get the best grades, always behave, are never rud, etc.

Not that that all happends, but people can dream, right?

Sorry JeZz, but this article is wrong, wrong, wrong in most of today's highschools. The stereotypes are preps, goths, emos, losers, and sl*uts. I hardly ever hear anyone being called a band geek, and when they are called that it's more of an endearing or joking term, not an insult. =/ I don't get saying that a lot of band members get good grades...there's a ton of complete idiots in a lot of bands I know. Oh well, nice try.

There's a lot of popular people in drama and chorus and band and orchestra and everything. The most popular kids at my school are in chorus with me at y school, and it's funny because all the jocks aren't very popular, and all the "band nerds" or "drama geeks" are the popular kids.
