Back to school means more than just new classes and new teachers. It is also the time for a new season of sports. There are very few sports off-limits to girls these days, at least in the United States. The last sports to start allowing coed teams are football and baseball. Most teams now allow girls to play, although some are decidedly less enthusiastic than others.

Traditionally fall sports include:

Water Polo

Water polo is a variation on swimming that makes the pool into something resembling a free-for-all soccer pitch. The goal in water polo is to get the ball into the goal. Of course youíre swimming at the time and you canít let your feet touch the bottom of the pool. Oh, and you can only touch the ball with one hand.

There are six players and one goalkeeper for each side in the pool during play. Water polo can get a bit vicious with kicks and other ďdefensiveĒ moves under the water Ė not to mention just trying to keep from drowning.

Volleyball

Volleyball is traditionally a girlís sport, although there are boy teams out there. In volleyball, the objective is to get the ball over the net and to hit the ground inside the boundaries. The other team, of course, is trying to stop the ball from hitting the ground by sending it back over the net to your side where you must return it and continue play.

Of course there are other rules about only hitting the ball three times on each side and rotating players, but this is a great game to take out aggression and practice hitting something. And who doesnít need that?

Football

Since it was first invented, American football has been the domain of boys. Girls got to be the cheerleaders. Of course, we all know cheerleading is a sport unto itself, but now girls are starting to make their way into the hallowed halls of football glory. There hasnít been a professional team with women yet, but itís only a matter of time.

In football, you put on tons of pads and use brute strength, a good running ability or a steady arm to move the football down the field. Of course the other team is trying to stop you and the ball from getting to their goal line, so they knock you down. The blood and bruises caused by all this tackling are the number on reason men claim the sport is too tough for girls. Yeah right, they should try childbirth someday.

Cross Country

Cross country is a sport that is beautiful in its simplicity. You just run. You run across the countryside Ė hence the name. Runners travel across rough terrain, not on a track, so the running is bit more challenging and you need a different kind of training. Sometimes you even have to run through mud or water. The entire run is usually three miles or more, so you have to be in great shape Ė this is no easy jog!

Soccer

Soccer is practically universal these days. Almost every country has teams and that includes many of the schools or community centers. In soccer a team of eleven players tries to kick the ball down the court and into the opposite goal. Of course the other team is trying to do the same thing, so to play soccer you have to be in shape and ready to kick a few ankles. There is a lot of running, a few head butts and plenty of enthusiasm.

BTW: You ush someone underwater in water polo to cause a foul. Fouls keep the game running, aka they're a good thing.
