For years science fiction was supposed to be the stuff of men and boys. Only, as we know, itís not. Science fiction is not only appealing to girls, but some of it seems to be created just for us. Sci-fi may not be girly, but it certainly has some feminine flair!

What is Science Fiction?

Science fiction, or sci-fi, and fantasy are often confused. They are very similar, but are not actually the same thing. Fantasy has to do with magic and mysterious things. Anything that canít really happen falls under fantasy. Talking animals, magic, traveling through mystical realms and the like are all fantasy.

Science fiction is something that might someday happen in the future with the help of, you guessed it, science. Space travel, time travel and robots are science fiction. So the bottom line: If it canít really happen, itís fantasy. If it could, no matter how far in the future, itís science fiction.

Sci-Fi for Girls

Some authors and movie makers are realizing that girls make a better audience than boys. We are starting to see a lot more sci-fi in the movies, on television and on book shelves that girls like and understand better than boys do.

The Books

My personal Sci-Fi favorite at the moment is actually a series of books. The Uglies is the first book by Scott Westerfield in the series. The Pretties is next and finally The Specials. In the future, everyone gets a serious dose of plastic surgery at the age of sixteen. One girl realizes however, as she desperately waits for her turn to become as beautiful as everyone else, that not everything is as simple as beauty and ugliness. She also realizes there might be more to the surgery than she imagined.

The Shows

As far my Sci-Fi TV experience, Iím a fan of the classics. Star Trek was good a few years ago and itís still pretty good television. Characters change, but the basics never do. There are good times and bad aboard the space crafts and creatures from all over work together, fight together and sometimes fall in love together. Good stuff. I also donít mind watching Stargate or the Medium.

The Movies

A good science fiction movie is something worth seeing. The Matrix and Star Wars come to mind, but there are other good ones. Iíll admit I didnít care for the second Matrix, but the first and last were great.

As far as Star Wars is concerned, I didnít really care for Episode 1, but they had it figured out by Episode III. And, of course there was never a thing wrong with Episodes IV, V, and VI. In fact, there were quite a few things that were just right. How many guys liked the little bears in Episode VI? And Hans was never very hard to look at. Leia was a tough broad who kept the men folk in their place even while wearing a metal bikini. We should all be that classy.

i guess Uglies counts as a sci-fi that was a great book. but i read Ender's game and i couldn't finish it. it was ok but it took a while to get into the story. its more of a guy thing i guress with the animal tourture and taking over the world stuff. it reminded me of Halo.

and Star Wars is the BEST ever. i loved the little bears they made me laugh so hard and how they thought C3PO was a god.

Doctor Who is my thing. Same bout the Matrix but I really couldn't care less about Stars Wars. My family is potty about it and I'm not. Why does everyone say those 'teddy bears' - as my brother says - are so cute? They are ugly.

Personally I love sci-fi but have never once sat through a Star Wars movie. I'm actually writing a short novel with my dad in that genre.

But as for sci-fi books, Uglies is okay but I recommend Orson Scott Card all the way. He's amazing. ONe of my favorite authors. Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow and my favorites the Memories of Earth series. Just amazing stuff.

Nice article. Personally I think that girls can read any sci-fi they want even if Uglies etc. are geared towards us. The genre's wide open.
