The terms anime and manga are thrown around a lot and often used to mean the same thing – Japanese art or television shows. While they are similar, they are certainly not the same. With so much attention being focused on anime and manga these days, it is important that you understand what make each one different and why they are so popular.

Anime

Anime is simply Japanese animation. It has a very distinct look with elaborated, child like features and bright colors. It seems like we have always had cartoons, and now anime gives us one more choice for a favorite Saturday morning activity.

Anime actually got its start in Japan over 100 years ago. Live action movies weren’t that popular and there wasn’t a great deal of variety in the actors. Over in the United States and United Kingdom, the population is mixed with so many different skin and hair colors that finding different looking actors for parts wasn’t a problem. Apparently it was over in Japan.

So, the answer to the lack of movies was to create animated ones. Animation, or anime, is huge in Japan and long and complex storylines have been extremely popular for years. Anime is becoming a serious art form and the individual style of the art in movies or television shows is often distinct enough to recognize individual artists.

While anime seems to have become extremely popular almost overnight, it has actually had a following in western countries for years. Even some of the classic American cartoons like Bambi and Betty Boop are inspired by anime. The large eyes on both Bambi and Betty are based on a particular style of anime that shows a lot of emotion.

Manga

Anime is a cartoon, and Manga is a story. Manga is printed cartoons and stories and are often very large or broken into several installments.Essentially, manga is a Japanese comic book. It is very common for people of all ages in Japan to read manga and many of the most popular magazines in the country have ongoing manga stories as standard features.

The manga most of us are familiar with are translated versions of the original Japanese story lines. Although many English speaking artists and writers are getting in on the trend. The traditional books or stories are read from top to bottom and right to left, although this isn’t always the case any more. The cover and first few pages might have color, but most of the other pages are in black and white.

In Japan, most of the manga is produced in magazines using very cheap, thin paper – like a phone book. These books contain entire stories and sections of stories all bundled together. Most books are anywhere from 300 to 800 pages long!

Once a particular story has become popular, it might be made into a “real” book or even made into its own anime television show. This is why there is so much confusion between anime and manga. Manga inspired many of the anime shows we know and love. It almost seems like they are the same thing, but they really aren’t. That would be like saying Superman the comic book is the same as Superman the movie.

If you love manga and anime, The Doll Palace can help you get your fix. With tons of new anime coloring pages, you can practice your very own style of art. You might even upload a few of your own favorites to share with everyone else.
