Unless you live south of the Equator, summer is all about the sun. Outside sports and lying by the pool beckon to us as soon as the weather warms up, and it is very tempting to forget the sun block in favor of a "healthy tan." Resist the temptation though. There is no such thing as a healthy tan Ė at least from the sun. Summer is the most critical time to take care of your skin.

Sun Myths

There are some old myths about the sun and tanning flying around the refuse to die. Unfortunately, they are just not true and can actually hurt you if you happen to believe them. Get the truth about staying healthy in the sun and protect your skin now and well into the future.

Tanning is good for you.

This is wrong on so many levels. The sunlight may feel great on your skin, but if you let it tan you Ė even a little bit, you've just damaged your skin. A tan right now might not seem like a big deal because you don't see any damage, unless you burned instead of tanned, but believe me, it's there. The sun is incredibly aging.

The more time you spend with a tan (or a burn) the more likely you are to get wrinkles and spots. You also run a greater risk of skin cancer with every bronze glow. Of course, I know how tempting it is to not worry about it since you don't see anything except a great tan now, but believe me, it will show up sooner than you think and it won't be pretty.

You need a tan to be healthy

There is some truth to this, but it has almost nothing to do with the actual tanning. You DO need exposure to the sun for your skin to create Vitamin D, but there is no rule saying you need to tan to get that vitamin. In fact, ten to fifteen minutes in the sun twice a week is all you really need. If you're just dying to get your Vitamin D, go without sunscreen for ten minutes, and then lather it on. Of course, you also realize that ten minutes is probably how long it takes you to walk from your car to the mall and back, so there is really no excuse to not wear sunscreen.

Tanning in a booth is better for you.

Nope. Tanning in a booth is much, much worse than tanning in the sun. When you're in the sun, there is at least a vitamin that comes along with the skin damage, and occasional cloud cover or partial shade can help block some of the rays. Tanning in a booth is truly a "fake bake." You are baking your skin and hitting it with more UVA and UVB rays than you ever could just sitting in the sun. It's like skin damage in a can.

Tanning makes you prettier

You are pretty regardless of your skin color. The large variety of dolls here at The Doll Palace can show you that easily enough. You don't need a bit of extra color on you to stand out, but if you're just dying to look like you've been tanning, stick with a bronzing power or self tanner. That is the only way you can ever achieve a "healthy" tan.

That's a bit offensive knewgirl...it's rude to imply that every girl that is tan and blonde dresses sl*utty, I am tan and blonde but I don't dress like a sl*utty. That's like saying everyone who is brunette and pale dresses nerdy.

Haha, and I tan in my yard nakie all the time, wintergurl01. XD No one's gonna see me, so I don't worry about it.

My grandma is in her 70s and she gets chocolate tan every summer. She hasn't gotten skin cancer. My aunts get chocolate tan very year. They are in their late 40s and are still fine. My dad is 44 and got WAY too dark every summer and the only skin cancer he only got was about a wart sized patch of it and it was easily frozen off. Yes, skin cancer can happen. Yes, it can be dangerous. No, not everyone is going to get cancer and die from tanning. Going out in your car is much more dangerous than tanning and a lot more people die from it, but we still do it. You can die walking around. You can die from nearly anything. People are so paranoid about potentially dangerus things nowadays that they sometimes forget to just relax and live my life. Can tanning kill me? Yes, but I'm not going to give it up and become paranoid about burning every time I walk outside.

I completely disagree with alabamablonde1. Skin cancer is a much bigger deal these days because the ozone layer is weaker which means that more UVA and UVB rays reach our skin.

For me? Well I burn either way. I burn even if I put on sun screen. It's not bad though. I've learned ina amjor way from not using sunscreen. Try having all your skin peel off and not be able to sleep. yeah, it's not fun.

Very useful tips. It's a wealth of information to those who may not know these things. But you forgot to mention that with clouds, sometimes the sun is way more dangerous than it is without cloud cover. That's when the most potientally dangerous rays are out.

Yeah,

I don't tan, I burn.

I'm also a year round swimmer, in the winter it's inside but, in the summer I'm in the sun a LOT.

alabamablonde1 so what if you can get cancer from just about everything what are you going to do go outside and tan and not care and then what will you do when you end up with skin cancer in like 10 years, just remeber that you have been warned and i think that no matter where you are going in summer you should wear sunbloc because who cares about a tan aslong as your healthy thats the main thing right

I have to agree with alabamablonde13. Also, did you notice Jessica did not publish this? It didn't seem like something she would publish, anyway...

I disagree. Sure, the sun may cause cancer, but just about anything can cause cancer nowadays. The human race wouldn't even be in existance anymore if the sun was so bad, it's just our generation that's so paranoid about every da*mn thing. Sure, the ozone layer was better then, but it still wasn't great, and yet, most of them still managed to come out alive.I would also never use a fake tanner because they make you look orange. I also disagree with the statement "tanning doesn't make you prettier." If you took a pair of identical twins, let one get a gourgeous, bronzey tan and leave the other to be ghostly pale, I bet you most guys would say the tan girl was the prettier one. I also don't think it's right to say "The large variety of dolls here at The Doll Palace can show you that easily enough.". You shouldn't compare yourself to a bunch of pixels. Ever.

Just my two cents.
