  Doll Body Image (Doll Article)

(July 07, 2007 by yoshie Send DollMail )
whats the big deal? alot of people seemed to be concerned with the shape of the dolls on the doll palace. I notice thet some dolls have a slim physic and others are more curvy. I don't see why people obcess over a dolls image really the dolls are just dolls. I don't think that body image is a huge concern. I think it is rude to criticize the dollmakers seriously why are people so concerned with the way the dolls look???????

i think that this whole topic is rediculous, i think the dolls shapes are fine, and they shouldnt be little toothpicks, it unrealistic, most of the worlds population is "curvy" not 80 pounds, for most ages is 30 pounds underwheight!!!!

It doesn't matter.

Go start a help group if your so worried.

Shut down the media if your so worried.

You'll never do anything just complaining about it. Which would be why I'm apart of orginazitions that actually work with these people, not just sit around all day and freak out.

now i tried 2 address my IDEA in a nice way. and i konw people r gonna have their opinions but when someone makes statements like "u must have self-esteem problems", that makes me mad because u can't say that someone has that issue cuz they want more variety.

And I think there is nothing wrong with the way they think. Just because they want some dolls in different body sizes DOESN'T mean they think way too much about body image. Like I said before, if they had low self esteem then they wouldn't care about a doll's body size. If you think that dolls should be all different colors does that mean you think way too much about race? Well if it does mean that then I guess I think way too much about it. NOT! You think the dolls look fine but for curvy girls who are PROUD of their curves, they think these dolls need a little meat on their bones and there is nothing wrong with that. Dolls look like humans. If you didn't know, even the body of a Barbie doll was remade to look more like the body of a real human. Although it isn't curvy, people were talking enough about body image with Barbie that Mattel made the doll's body a little fatter. Don't believe me? Go look it up! It's real.

And it's not just African Americans who are Black.....I am Puerto Rican but I'm still Black. My point is, if there should be a variety of dolls in all colors then there should be a variety of dolls in all weight sizes. If it's not fair to make dolls in only one color then how do you make it seem fair to make dolls in only one size?

No, I don't think it would be odd to see an overweight doll. Just because someone is overweight doesn't make them ugly...this is what the media has taught you or your family. And I am sticking to the Doll Palace too, body image is a big concern here also. Otherwise there wouldn't be so many topics about creating certain types of dolls. And people are concerned with the way they look because it's not fair to all of the people who aren't skinny with blonde hair and can't make dolls of themselves. People always say dolls aren't supposed to look like you, but when people make club dolls, isn't it a fact that the dolls are modeled to look like a certain member? Or that these people actually request dolls that look at least somewhat like them? And to some people curvy is overweight. There is a model by the name of Toccara who is overweight but if a doll was made with her body shape it wouldn't look funny. She is a very curvy and pretty model.

Ice lolly i completely agree wit u on the humans part but why is everyone concerned wit the way dolls look I think they are fine just the way they are thata why i agreed wit alabama blond1. Some of these girls think too much about body image . I think there is a variety like i said b4 the dolls are either skinny or curvy i think it would look odd to have an overweight doll, don't u . as 4 the race thing that has nothing to do wit what i'm talking about and isn't in my concerns but there should be a variety in dolls not only in african american but in my race mexican american 2. I feel strongly about race and whats goin on with immigration i think its pretty said and hurts how ppl feel bout immigrants since my grandparents were once immigrants and are living strongly here!

And Yoshie, body image IS a huge concern. Especially with the media. They block out anyone who isn't pretty enough, tall enough, White enough, rich enough, thin enough. And these dolls give away the same image. And if we really had low self esteem we WOULDN'T want dolls to look like us, because we HATE the way we look. You get it? So alabama's comment just really makes no sense. Yoshie, do you think all dolls should be White? Or represent all colors of the world? That is also part of doll image. Well why shouldn't they represent all weight sizes?

I agree with Fang77. I also don't understand why so many of you argue with others because they want dolls in different shapes. Obviously the dolls are supposed to immitate humans or else they would look like animals. So, since they imitate humans, why can't they immitate all types of humans and not just the ones who are supposed to have "perfect" bodies. I think these dolls should be in all shapes, sizes and colors. And I think alabamablonde1's comment makes no sense at all. Just because I want to see more (in my case) Black dolls that look like me, that means I have low self esteem? No, it means I am PROUD of the way I look and don't see why even dolls shouldn't look like me. There is nothing wrong with being too dark, too light, too skinny, too fat, so making dolls with only one look isn't fair for people who want a doll to look like them! After all, dolls imitate humans, we don't immitate them.
