Wearing Your Wealth
If you've got it, flaunt it. While this may be true for many things, some individuals are taking this adage to the extreme. Displaying assets has taken on an entirely new meaning in the modern age. Jewelry has always been the ultimate accessory, but is it possible it's now gone too far?

Cultural Meaning

In some cultures, displaying a family's wealth in the form of expensive jewelry has been practiced for centuries, perhaps even millenniums. Of course this extends past secure banking and even the relative safety of a good safe. Wealth was simply safer sometime on the body.

Still, in many cultures around the globe today, women especially proudly display tokens of a family's wealth in the means of gold necklaces, bracelets and more. Social standing and pride are at stake.

Moving Beyond Respectable

Of course, there is nothing wrong with supporting your heritage and proudly displaying your culture. But what of individuals who are trying to make a different statement all together. Diamond encrusted belt buckles and necklaces as large as someone's face might be worth a great deal of money, but are they representative of someone's good taste?

Wearing Your Wealth
While beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder, this excessive jewelry, or "bling" has become a sort of dividing line between two camps. One group believes that jewelry should be an accessory and compliment an otherwise pulled together outfit. The other camp feels that jewelry is the focus of a person's outfit and everything pales in comparison to a six inch diamond encrusted money sign. After all, that money sign dangling from your neck says it all – or does it?

The Meaning of Bling

Bling is supposed to mean that you have money to burn. Only an individual with deep pockets can afford to spend the price of a house on a single pair of earrings. This is nothing new. Well-to-do families have been buying expensive jewelry as a form of investment and beauty since the beginning of time.

Wearing Your Wealth
The difference comes when the jewelry goes from being tasteful to questionable. An expensive diamond choker is a classical piece that will be in demand for years to come. A rich family who has such an heirloom passes it down and treats it like a treasure. Taking the same diamonds and making them part of a large dog collar or spelling out your name on your belt buckle does not have the same degree of tastefulness.

Wearing Your Wealth
Of course most of us can not afford either one – priceless heirloom or flashy dog collar, but we are still entitled to our opinions. Everyone can also play with all kinds of jewelry here on the Doll Palace. It can be assumed from celebrity statements that wearing large amounts of overly flashy (tacky?) jewelry indicates excessive wealth and a certain sense of style.

One of the main problems with this statement is that often, the excessive wealth that allows these individuals to purchase such large pieces of jewelry quickly disappears. So the question is: if you spend all of your money on jewelry to show how rich you are….are you still rich?
