You have a style. You have a style of clothing, you have a hair style, and perhaps most importantly of all, you have a style of music. Depending on your individual personality, you might simply enjoy listening to your music or you might live through your music. While the teenage world seems to revolve around rock, pop, and R&B, there is much more than that out there to choose from.

Of course, if you are forced to listen to something other than your personal favorite, your immediate response is to reject it – loudly and to anyone who'll listen. After all, how can you like country, ANY country song, when it is so obvious you are into heavy rock? If you haven't already figured this out, you will eventually – sometimes a song is just good. You might like it even if you hate every other rap song out there. It's just part of life and most folks catch on to that sooner or later.

The Genres

Diversity aside, there are clear categories of music, and often you can pick out the style a person likes just by looking at them – or can you?

– Slow melodies with just a hint of a twang are now mixed with electric guitar and some pretty funny lyrics. Country songs often tell stories that average people can relate to. The style of country with its drawl and guitars are usually met with an "I love it!" or a definite, "I hate it!" Occasionally, there are the folks who only like the love songs, because nobody can belt out a ballad like a country singer.

– As much as your parents may hate to hear it, anything from the 1980s and beyond are now considered oldies. Some people may even consider music from the 1990s oldies, but many of those bands and singers are still around and rocking, so we consider them contemporary for now. Golden oldies were popular in their day, and many of them still are. These are favorites at dances as they are so non-threatening and fun, even for people who are still working on their master dance moves – YMCA, anyone?

– Rock, or Rock and Roll as it was once called, is actually a very wide category of music. There is pop rock which is the Top 40, Brittany Spears, style of rock, and there are much heavier styles of rock ranging from punk rock, to hard rock, and even into the scary realm of death metal. It's rather odd to think that Celine Dion's soft rock and Marilyn Manson's odd rock could be remotely related, isn't it?

– Believe it or not, there are some people under the age of fifty who can get into jazz music. Some people believe jazz music is the foundation for almost all contemporary styles including rock and R&B. jazz has a funky beat and fun tempos. It might be performed by an instrumental band, or by a solo artist – either on an instrument such as a saxophone or as a singer. Entire clubs and festivals have sprung up to pay homage to this legendary style.

– Classical is as "old-school" as it gets. The first classical piece was probably beat out on rocks with sticks by our ancestors, but the most famous of the classical composers include the likes of Beethoven, Mozart and Vivaldi. Classical is closely tied to the instrumental music of today, and it is a wide net across all the generations and centuries of composers. Classical is another style of music you either love…or hate.

– Rhythm and Blues is another wide variety of music. R&B includes everything from the Motown hits of the 1950s to the hard-hitting gangsta rap of the current day. Despite the style, most R&B can be tied together by the rhythm and groove of the tunes. R&B is another cultural icon and has had a great impact on almost every other style of music including rock and country.

Of course, you are not just your music – even if you want to be. Everyone is made up of a complicated mix of likes, dislikes and emotions. These will change hundreds of times throughout your life, and it's probably already fun to look back and wonder why you EVER liked the Backstreet Boys and wonder how anyone can avoid the charm of Chris Brown. Whatever your style, find outfits and personalities to match here on the Doll Palace.

My favorites are country, oldies (call me crazy), and alternative rock. I can't stand rap and BOYBANDS (though some songs are good). And artists like Neko Jump (you'll definitely know 'em if you're Thai) and Brit.

I like a giant mix of all types of music.

'ive even listened to some classical music. I used to like country, too. And I recently got into some death medal and indie stuff. for death medal, as scary as it seems, there's always a point to what they're screaming. And indie is just great music to just hang out and listen to.

i think evry style of music has a meaning. I'm truly obsessed with music.

I listen to a wide genre of music... rock, country, oldies, pop, r&b, metal, punk, and pretty much anything that falls into those categories... but there are a couple singers i absolutely can't stand( No offense to ne1 whos likes these singers), theres fergie, jojo, and hilary duff! plus a bunch of rap artists, but i still like a couple of their songs. So to sum everything up.. my taste in music is pretty confusing! Lol but i have to say three days grace, disturbed, hinder, and rise against are the best
