Celebrity dollsI forget who said it, but I once heard that a model is not really a person on the runway, but more of a living coat hanger. With that in mind, it makes sense that the models must all be rather tall, slender, and roughly the same size and shape to ensure clothing drapes beautifully Ė the way it was designed. But is there such a thing as too thin for a model?

Body Woes

The United States has had a great deal of television and news dedicated to the celebrities and models in the spotlight. Apparently there is a tremendous amount of pressure on these young ladies to stay as trim and fit as possible. Unfortunately, many of these women crack under the pressure and chose unhealthy means to reach their target weight. That weight and size might also be extremely unhealthy as well.

The Results

Celebrity dollsUnfortunately, while body image might be a huge consideration for models and celebrities, it has trickled down to those who are not living in the spotlight. Eating disorders and image problems have never received as much press as they have in recent years. Young girls everywhere are getting ill from not eating correctly simply because they want to look like the beauties on the runways and magazines.

Taking Control

Some countries are beginning to take control of the situation, however. Many countries, led by Spain, are beginning to ban models under the age of 16 and of a certain weight. Italy is the latest of the group to be working on a manifesto stating exactly how far is too far for these women.

Celebrity dollsThe countries making the changes are some of the most fashion forward, and it is likely that others will be joining them. In Spain, models must now have a body mass index (BMI) of more than 18.5. This means that they are healthy overall for their height. Underweight models will be banned from the catwalks.

While this regulation might seem a bit silly, or perhaps a long time in coming, it has roots in serious events. A model in Brazil, Ana Carolina Resto, actually died from complications of anorexia. In her desire to stay thin, she brought about her own death. A month before another model, Luisel Ramos, died from heart failure brought on by anorexia. Many of the governments now feel obligated to step in and help put a stop to unhealthy practices on the runway and magazines.

What It Means

Celebrity dollsWhile most of us are not in the group being banned from the catwalk, the new legislation does have an impact on everyone. Instead of being inundated with images of super skinny girls wearing the latest styles, we might actually get to see healthy beauty on television and in magazines.

Perhaps over time the standards will change and we'll get to see more models like Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, and others who are more interested in looking healthy and beautiful than skinny and beautiful. It can only be a change for the better to start admiring those who exercise and eat well rather than making celebrities of those simply not eating at all.

i agree 200%. Model's who are anorexic (or bulemic) need to realize that their beautiful the way they are, and are also models not only for fashion, but for young girls (and boys?) everywhere. So I also completley agree with countries like Spain, who are banning (?) models who are under 16 or under a certain weight.

i aggree that sometimes people can't help the way they look, like to skinny or to big ,but at the end of the day you have to be happy with who you are in the inside not how you look on the outside ,you can't always be perfect. I think you should be able to model whatever size you are!!!!!!!!

Models should be confident in who they are really.

I think that normal people should be modles and not the ones that are super skinny. Being skinny isn't the only thing that makes you beutiful. As long as your healthy.

Jeez

Weight is a problem everywhere, I mean I agree with this article 110% but also it affects almost everybody except smart ppl who know what a good weight is. There is a wide range of good weights, you dont have to be super skinny to be happy, you can be way overweight and still be happy too.

I heard about that thing in Spain, and I heard about some stuff going on in Italy and parts of Europe. Theyre banning models under a certain weight, and they have to prove that they dont have any eating or health disorders or anything or else they cant model.

I think thats really cool that theyre FINALLY taking some action in eating disorders and stuff!

I really don't understand the purpose of starving yourself.

You don't look the least bit healthy; Yet thanks to the media, young girls get it instilled in their heads it is.

Okay I have gone through and read all the comments, and to me this just seems to be an ongoing battle that will possibly never end. I know that models tend to be unhealthy and skinny, but that doesn't mean we should be against them! They didn't know what they were in for when they started and now that they have they can't stop! We should try and help them! I know I would love to be a model, but to be honest I'm not right for it! I have other more useful talents that I use to the fullest and I just try to be a normal person like the rest of you. Even if somebody tells you that you are too "fat" or too "skinny", they obviously don't know what they're are saying! THERE IS NO WEIGHT THAT EVERYONE SHOULD BE!! If we were all the same, what would life be like? That's what I want you to think about. And while I understand obesity and eating disorders are health problems, it doesn't mean we shouldn't be by there sides to help them through their time of need! Think about that!

Sure, Its great if you're skinny, and I think it is fine to have (somewhat) thin models. But when they start to get only skin and bones, its just disgusting!

eyeryone says that models are discustingly skiny but you have to remember thet some of us (like me) are naturally skiny and can't help it we are fighting to keep pounds on. I do admit thought that some of todays stars are becomeing outragusly skiny when they hve no reason to be

crazykiek, i think there's a difference between dolls and models. most girls know and understand that the dolls on tdp are unrealistic and fake, no matter how cute. but a lot of girls see models in magazines, and, since models are actual people, they cannot tell the difference between that and a beautiful woman, and THEREFORE (yes long explanation) try to be just like the "popular," "beautiful" models.
