Emma DollIt's a huge debate. Is fur okay? Fur has been making a comeback in the last few years as a luxury item. A lot of celebrities have been wearing fur, while others are still adamantly opposed to it. Believe it or not, fur has not been the object of such debate for centuries. It is only in the last few decades that it became so contested.

Fur Clothing

Fur was one of the earliest forms of clothing. Even Adam and Eve in the Bible wore "clothing of skin" after being banished from the Garden of Eden. Religious examples aside, fur has been a clothing staple for thousands of years. The earliest forms of man wore variations of fur and leather before the introduction of woven materials. Even today, in northern climates, only fur has the insulating properties required to maintain optimum warmth and comfort.

The fur that is so hotly debated has less to do with staying alive comfortably, and more to do with style and fashion. While you can't deny fur is considered incredibly stylish by much of the population and a luxury item, one can argue whether it is really necessary to have it at all.

Fur Doll

The Arguments against Fur

Many feel that the process used to make fur items is inhumane and unnecessary. Much of the fur used in jackets, gloves, and accessories is actually farmed, much like the meat we eat. The animals, including fox and mink, are raised in captivity and their fur is used for luxury items. Of course, some fur, such as seal and beaver, can only be had by capturing the animal in the wild. That fur is used for more practical clothing rather than designer jackets.

Many groups argue that fur is a waste of an animal's life and is not necessary. Many places where fur is popular do not reach the Arctic temperatures which might require it, and even those places with freezing temperatures have alternative options to using fur if they choose to. To raise an animal exclusively for its coat without using any other body part is considered extremely wasteful and unjust by these individuals and groups.

The Arguments for Fur

Fur DollThose who consider fur to be an acceptable fashion item defend their position with the same fervor as those who oppose it. To raise an animal for its fur is wasteful, claim those against it. Those for fur then argue that faux, or fake, fur is actually a petroleum product which can damage the environment. Natural fur is a renewable resource since the animals providing it can be easily bred, but faux fur uses oil products which can not be renewed.

In addition to the environmental arguments, the most obvious arguments are the natural beauty and warmth of the fur. It has become an extremely stylish accessory for many of the celebrities in the same way expensive jewelry has. If one can afford it and there are no laws against it, why shouldn't a person own a fur if they chose to?

While this argument has no obvious solution, it has spurned many a debate and has received a great deal of publicity over the years. Almost everyone has an opinion on the topic, but short of the government stopping all fur products, there will never be a clear answer. Of course, if you ban the fur, will you ban leather, meat, and all other animal products as well? It does make one think...

I am not opposed to wearing real fur. Most of the time animals are not killed just for their fur. For example, here in Newfoundland and Labrador people also eat seal because of it nutritional value and they use to use the oil and fat of seals to insulate their homes. People of Rural Newfoundland rely on hunting and fishing as a way of life.

Ok just a few things :

1. I'm not oppossed to fur. I just don't like it that much. Shoot me.

2. Think how overrun with rabbits our world would be without a few fur coats. Eh?

3.Have fun...be safe.

I never could wear fur, I can eat meat (some of it anyway), but I couldn't wear furr. It's the same as wearing a dead relatives skin on my back.

I agree with it being okay if we use the entire animal though. Like cows, we eat em, we use their hooves for glue and things, and the hide can be used to keep people warm.

Foxes, and minks, they're rather cute, and useless really. Except for the (silly, when you have other things available) use of it's fur.

Would you wear your beloved cat Fluffy around your neck?

Or your baby puppy Rex in a lovely coat?

Humans are nothing but animals, and as such, it would kind of follow, that if they had the mental deficient to follow the uselessness of fashion, they could skin us and use us for some sort of wallet or something of the like.

Like the idea? Becoming a wallet?

If Humans skins were as lovely, maybe.

But more or less, we're useless except for can openers and entertainment. And killing other creatures of course.

Hold it! Humans by nature are OMNIVORIOUS. We need both meat and veggie. Now those of you who say an animal is cruel, did you know that plants can scream? They make a very high pitched sound when damaged that humans can't hear. Isn't it just as cruel to make a plant die if it feels too??? Now as to fur, I don't wear it. I don't need to as I am in a less cool climate. If I lived in Minnesota or Montana I would. Cold is cold no matter where you live in the world.

I do not believe in being wasteful, but that is how A merican society is. Has any of you ever eaten fox or mink? No? Its cause it doesn't taste that good.

If you want to be not wasteful, don't buy the products. Economics says that if there is no market (IE buyers) then there will be no more product. Instead of calling fur wearers evil, why not try to convince them to wear fur that is made from a whole animal use. (Cattle, rabbit, and such)

You can't end fur, but you can end waste. Go ahead and get ou

Well I don't wanna write too much so I'll keep it sorta brief

First off, I'll have you know I'm vegetarian.

Second, I have a T Shirt that says "Mean People Wear Fur" on it

Third, well, fur is just wrong. The animals did nothing to you heartless beings. Personally, I made up this joke where u ppl (who skin the animals) were being brainwashed by the Government and that's why you skin the animals cause you don't have a mind of ur own.

Personally, that would probably work. Only in a cartoon though.

But this is a real world, with real animals, and real vegetation, and PETA and is here to stop it

By a T shirt from PETA...

Quote:

(for example, chickens: if you get chicken meat and eat the meat, you could use the fur for something so you're using the whole animal)

I thoght chickens had feathers....

I still agree with you tho. It just makes sense.

people just scrounge around trying to find new ways to make money. but this is not the soulution.

The whole thing is pretty sad. Animals shouldn't be killed for their fur. It's wrong because it's not thier fault, but they're being hurt. Make a difference and only ise faux fur or use it from passed animals!
