Emma DollIt's a huge debate. Is fur okay? Fur has been making a comeback in the last few years as a luxury item. A lot of celebrities have been wearing fur, while others are still adamantly opposed to it. Believe it or not, fur has not been the object of such debate for centuries. It is only in the last few decades that it became so contested.

Fur Clothing

Fur was one of the earliest forms of clothing. Even Adam and Eve in the Bible wore "clothing of skin" after being banished from the Garden of Eden. Religious examples aside, fur has been a clothing staple for thousands of years. The earliest forms of man wore variations of fur and leather before the introduction of woven materials. Even today, in northern climates, only fur has the insulating properties required to maintain optimum warmth and comfort.

The fur that is so hotly debated has less to do with staying alive comfortably, and more to do with style and fashion. While you can't deny fur is considered incredibly stylish by much of the population and a luxury item, one can argue whether it is really necessary to have it at all.

Fur Doll

The Arguments against Fur

Many feel that the process used to make fur items is inhumane and unnecessary. Much of the fur used in jackets, gloves, and accessories is actually farmed, much like the meat we eat. The animals, including fox and mink, are raised in captivity and their fur is used for luxury items. Of course, some fur, such as seal and beaver, can only be had by capturing the animal in the wild. That fur is used for more practical clothing rather than designer jackets.

Many groups argue that fur is a waste of an animal's life and is not necessary. Many places where fur is popular do not reach the Arctic temperatures which might require it, and even those places with freezing temperatures have alternative options to using fur if they choose to. To raise an animal exclusively for its coat without using any other body part is considered extremely wasteful and unjust by these individuals and groups.

The Arguments for Fur

Fur DollThose who consider fur to be an acceptable fashion item defend their position with the same fervor as those who oppose it. To raise an animal for its fur is wasteful, claim those against it. Those for fur then argue that faux, or fake, fur is actually a petroleum product which can damage the environment. Natural fur is a renewable resource since the animals providing it can be easily bred, but faux fur uses oil products which can not be renewed.

In addition to the environmental arguments, the most obvious arguments are the natural beauty and warmth of the fur. It has become an extremely stylish accessory for many of the celebrities in the same way expensive jewelry has. If one can afford it and there are no laws against it, why shouldn't a person own a fur if they chose to?

While this argument has no obvious solution, it has spurned many a debate and has received a great deal of publicity over the years. Almost everyone has an opinion on the topic, but short of the government stopping all fur products, there will never be a clear answer. Of course, if you ban the fur, will you ban leather, meat, and all other animal products as well? It does make one think...

Why would you kill something just for some jacket that costs about $300? And once you buy it you can't wash it or anything. Killing animals just to look good is WRONG.

i'm a chinchilla breeder, they are adorable cute, amazing, lively little rodents full of character.

it takes 800 chinchillas for one coat!!!!!!!!!!!!

they are killed with no respect ofr care!!!!!!!!!

a heartless man once told me as a young child

"i held the little beast by its neck and tail, then pulled, it wasn't dead, i threw it against a wall, and left it on the ground, it was in spasms, still not dead, i left it to die a painfull, death. I do this everyday. its my job."

belive it or not but this is how they kill chinchillas, they only do it for there fur. please help stop this!!!!!!!

my friend saw a program, they skin dogs alive, for there fur. they were craming animals in cages much to small for them, then they threw it off the top of lorries and buildings. this isn't right.

Please help stop it today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you think this is ok? YOU ARE A SICK, HEARTLESS, CRUEL, DISGUSTING PERSON!!!!!!!!

Please help stop it today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being part Native American, I believe it's bad to be wasteful. That's why I believe it would be okay to use the fur from animals that are also used as meat. This way nothing gets wasted.

We use animals for other things: food and such. However, I think it's rather gross to go around wearing an animal's skin, even if it is soft and stuff. I wouldn't want to wear a human skin, would you? That would be disgusting! If you want something fluffy to wear, get a scarf made out of fuzzy yarn or a piece of clothing with fake fur on it. Or get a cat or a dog and pet it. Killing animals just for their fur is wrong. In olden times--like back when America was still being settled, etc.--people used animal fur but generally they also used the other parts of the animals. They would eat the meat and the bones could be used for something as well. Okay, maybe that was just the Native Americans, but still...

I would never wear real fur. Fake fur, on the other hand, is fuzzy and doesn't involve being cruel to animals, so I might wear it. :-)

I have another opinion. Yes, you can use fur if you eat the animal as well. I should have thought about that before...

People should use artificial fur. I think that it's cruel if we kill animals for their fur and only that. Native Americans had the idea. Kill an animal, eat it, then use the fur for clothing and what not.

I rather wear fake fur and real fur makes me sad and a little freaked out. I'm an animal lover so i don't like wearing real fur but i don't hate people for wearing real fur. every one has their own opinions and they have the right to say them.

but i do belive that people can wear to much fur and that hurts the animals population.

At Macy's (a store) they had a line of coatswith a fur that was sapposeably fake. Macy's thought it was fake beacuse the ppl who made the coats said it was. but the fur was tested and it was DOG FUR. i know, sad. but Macy's got rid of all of those coats and the ppl who made the coats were fined for lying about the fur.
