Mermaid dollsMermaids have long existed all over the world. Or, at least, stories of mermaids have existed. Mermaids, like many other mysterious creatures are believed to exist by some, and considered simple legends and stories by others. It is a fact, however, that stories of mermaids developed all over the world, seemingly independent of the tales (or should it be tails?) of others.

The Mermaid

The classic mermaid is a beautiful young woman with long flowing locks of hair, but instead of hips and legs, she has a fish tail. The older tales of mermaids portrayed the creatures in a rather unfortunate light. Instead of being the helpful singing versions we love today, they were much like the Sirens of ancient mythology and sang sailors to their deaths. Sometimes, even if they were feeling helpful, they would crush the life from a man as they rescued him from the sea.

Mermaids did not live alone in the sea, but rather with mermen, or other merfolk. Allegedly entire civilizations existed under the oceans. The fantastical places have never been seen or documented, but that certainly doesnít mean they donít exist, right? Most mermaids seem to be sighted on rocks or simply surfacing from the water near ships.

Tales of Mermaids

Over time, mermaids became a bit gentler and minded their own business. Every sailor was cautioned about mermaids just in case the ladies tried to tempt him, and those sailors often saw visions at sea they swore were mermaids. They carried these tales back to land where stories of the beautiful sea ladies flourished. Today, many think they might have seen manatees, or large sea mammals that cradle their young much like humans, but there is no way to know for sure.

The tales of mermaids did not stop hundreds of years ago, but rather continue today. There are occasional reports from one corner of the world or another about seeing living or dead mermaids. After the giant tsunami in 2003, many pictures circulated of alleged mermaids washing up on the beach, but they were proven false. Some sighting have occurred as close as Canada and by multiple people at a single time. One, in 1967, was even accompanied by a picture in the local newspaper.

The Meaning of Mermaids

If mermaids are real, as many claim, they donít seem to have any meaning by themselves. They are simply another creature much like humans and the Lock Ness Monster. They are fascinating to study and make wonderful additions to stories of all types. Popular books, movies, and artwork contains images of mermaids and there is every indication that merfolk will continue to be a part of many cultures for a long time.

If you enjoy mermaids and their tales, tails, and legends, you have an excellent resource available here at The Doll Palace. You can create your own mermaid dolls, give those dolls names and personalities, and perhaps even create your own mermaid legend luring sailors of your choice to you or to torment, depending on your mood that day.
