Christmas Dolls

The day after Thanksgiving is the kickoff to the most important season of the year. Who cares about football? I'm talking about the one, the only, Christmas- or for simplicity sake- Xmas Shopping.

I'm not sure when it became such a huge deal, but immediately following Thanksgiving, at least in the United States, the left-over turkey goes into the fridge, and the checkbooks come out (of purses, not the fridge.) Stores have gotten onboard with the whole thing, and offer huge sales to kick of the Season of Savings.

Xmas Shopping: A How-to

For those who have made it a point to skip out each year, or have simply been unaware, there is a method to the madness. Xmas shopping is not for the faint of heart. It takes stamina, raw energy, and the occasional sharp elbow if one encounters a shopper trying to cut in line.

    Begin preparations the night before.

Many stores offer "early-bird" specials as soon as 4am. Sometimes, these deals are really worth it. Other times, it's just fun to mess around with friends or family at 4am outside the mall. Layout your clothes, and dress in layers. It might be cold starting out, but it's sure to warm-up as you lug huge bags around.

    Eat a good breakfast.

Shopping takes a great deal of energy, as almost any teenage girl can tell you. Skipping breakfast will make you drag and become grouchy long before it's time for a coffee break. Bring snacks as well, just in case you are suddenly starving while waiting in line.

    Bring someone fun.

Yes, shopping can go rather quickly if it is just you, but it's certainly not as fun. A lot of mothers and daughters have a tradition of spending the day together with their Xmas shopping, but a good girlfriend is also a viable option. Unless you have a boyfriend or brother who loves shopping and crowds as much as you do, you might want to reconsider bring the testosterone out on this expedition. Leave them to the football on TV.

    Consider a list.

If you already have an idea of what you want to get your sisters and dad, write it down. You might find those exact gifts on sale, or you might find something even better. If you have no idea, that's no problem either. Browsing is all part of the fun! Don't forget a few items for yourself, it's Christmas for everyone, after all.

    Have fun!

Xmas shopping is all about having fun while picking out perfect items for others. Laugh, talk, and shop 'til you drop. It is the season for it after all. One word of caution: Be a bit wary of the true die-hards. Some women forget that shopping is about having a good time, and take the whole thing way too seriously. If a lady looks like she is about to lose it over the last pair of earrings you picked up, you might just let her have them. There is no sense earning a bit of media coverage by being attacked by an insane shopper.

Christmas shopping is a wonderful excuse to blow your hard-earned money and have a great day or two with friends and family. It is even more important to remember that Christmas is the season of giving, not receiving. That is what makes picking out those perfect gifts so much fun! Happy shopping!
