Goths - they seem to be in every school and neighborhood. Kids, and sometimes adults, dress completely in black with pale faces and dark make-up. The all black attire usually means one of two things, either it's Halloween, or you're looking at a Goth.

What is Goth?

The word Goth is short for Gothic. The term Gothic as we know it today was originally a style of literature highly focused on the dark aspects of life and heavily infused with romance. Darkly romantic novels carried through the centuries to become darkly romantic people, or the Goths we see presently.

Typically speaking, Goths dress in black or other dark colors and tend to favor romantic styles of clothing. Long skirts, ruffles, or frills are true of some Goth girls, while clothing styles more commonly defined as Punk might better suit others.

Where did Goths Come From?

The first Goths were actually German and partially responsible for the fall of the Roman Empire, but they have no bearing on the Goths we know today. Our Goths began as Punks during the 1970s and 1980s. Punk Rock bands originated during this time and gained in popularity as the voice for those refusing to conform to stereotypes.

In the early 1980s, some bands spun off into a slightly different sound and appearance and became known as Gothic or death rock bands. Over time, new bands without the same style of music began to call themselves Goth, and the term no longer held any musical value, but rather described appearances and attitude.

Goth Appearances

Early Goth style came directly from the big screen. Horror movies spawned the modern Goth styles. Vampires and femme fatales are the grandparents of the Goth clothing so common today. Pale faces, dark eyes, and sometime dark lips combine with long, occasionally unkempt hair to create the traditional look. Clothing is dark, and traditionally attitudes were somber and even depressed.

Of course today, thirty-five years of Goth have evolved into any number of “normal” Goth appearances. Just like everyone else, Goths dress as they please and may look nothing like the Goths of the 80s and 90s. Movies, books, and bands have all put a new twist on what is cool within Goth circles, so there is not really a right or wrong way to be Goth. Really, all you have to do is say you're Goth, and nobody will be able to say otherwise.

Goth Today

Goths today may or may not be deeply romantic, and they might be the funniest person you know. Many Goths simply enjoy wearing all black or other gothic attire. Goths are easily confused with punks, and even with those who seek no grouping, but prefer to dress a certain way. The irony of course, is that Goths, and Punks for that matter, all set out to be different from stereotypes, but have created a stereotype all their own.

Are you a Goth? Find or practice your own unique Goth style here at the Doll Palace, or see if perhaps it's time to put away your preppy clothes and take on a whole new, darker persona.

the term "goth" acctually refers to the gothic period in french history. the movie the hunchback of notre dame is set in the gotich period, so it kinda shows you what it is like. no, they weren't like american goths are now, it really spawned the creation of many great works of art, and styles of archutechtural (sp?) design, such as flying buttresses and rossetta style windows. so really, gypsies and french peasents were the original goths.

vderikthevamp did you get the "as you wish" line from princess bride? I love that movie.

btw sterio types are a bad thing they ought to be out lawed and how is it when ever some set of people try to break from fashion that sets ideas become a fashion its ridiculous. And Goths are history every thing is a kind of history, every fashion ,and culture you see has its roots in the past. (incase u can't tell I'm a history lover )

I really liked this article and I must admit that I rarely read them but this one caught my eye. I'm old enough to remember the punk scene, grunge scene, and the newer gothic scene. My closet is filled with clothing similar to the outfits for the dolls. Although I don't fully understand the labeling of today, I like the gothic style of clothing but I also lead a "normal" life. I'm married and work full time as a cake decorator. What style of clothing you prefer shouldn't matter, it's what's on the inside that counts. You can't judge a book by it's cover and you can't judge a person by the style of clothing they prefer. Always remember that and also remember that attitude doesn't have to match your clothing and the label others give you. You can wear the darkest of clothing but have a heart of gold.

I really dig this article. And the part about how goths and punks try so hard to be different (but in the end are a stereotype themselves) is completely true. It's insane.

I apologize in advance for what I am about to say:

Nobody cares how goth you are, or how many Anne Rice books you have read, or how much you love A7X or MCR. Honestly. It's a lifestyle that evolved into a fashion statement. Most true goths are dead, or have moved on to have a house in the suburbs with 2.5 kids and a dog.

I wish I was gothic. No offense to anyone but who are you to judge if you've never met one? I've met a few goths and I love them all. Like, so they dress different and are either into death or extreme romance? That makes them weird. Well guess what? From someone so dark anyone that listens to rap or hiip hop is weird. Stereotyping is not going to help you, and sorry for ranting but I had to say that.

Wicked article. You tell them, Goths aren’t just black wearing mopping people, they look like everyone else and for the norm they are really great people, most are really creative and like to stand out a bit. Just because someone wears black doesn’t mean they are a Goth, and just because someone doesn’t wear black doesn’t mean their not a Goth.
