Pixie dust? Tinkerbell? What is a pixie anyway? You might flippantly say they are a kind of fairy, but they most certainly are not! Pixies are a breed entirely to themselves, and they are not necessarily the nice guys…
Are They Fairies?
Not exactly. If this were a family reunion, the pixies would be the ones trying to spike the punch. Fairies tend to be rather benevolent beings, but pixies are more like a cross between an evil leprechaun and an elf. They are tiny, like fairies, but spend more time trying to cause trouble than cast magic spells on sleeping beauties.
So, if they aren’t fairies, what are they? Pixies are little beings that are supposedly caught between heaven and hell. Since they exist in this limbo state forever, they bide their time causing mischief. As far as physical appearance, pixies don’t have wings, and traditionally have pointed ears. They are usually dressed in green with a pointed hat, and they might also have eyes that slant up slightly, much like an elf.
Even though pixies don’t have wings, many can still fly. Pixies leave none other than the famous pixie dust behind when they fly or in their footsteps when they walk. If you are Disney fan, you already know that a little bit of pixie dust can also help children fly – at least in the movies. Of course, pixies can really look anyway you want them to; try out a few different styles here on The Doll Palace to get a feel for them.
Pixies are naughty little vixens and enjoy playing tricks on the unsuspecting. In olden times, they were known to steal horses during the night and bring them back with only tangled manes as evidence. In increasingly more modern times, pixies tend to irritate humans by throwing things at them and stealing their belongings.
Other pixies might lead travelers astray, especially at night, and if you are “pixie-led” you will most likely wind up lost. If you attempt to track or catch a pixie deliberately, you will probably disappear off the face of the earth - forever. If though, you feel the onset of a pixie spell, you can simply turn your coat inside out to confuse the pixies and make your escape.
Protection from Pixies
There are certain means to avoiding or placating the pixies. Pixies are repelled by iron, as they are hurt by contact with the metal. Some believe that leaving bowls of food or milk out for the pixies will keep them happy. If pixies feel welcomed and appreciated, they might even help out by cleaning your room while you sleep, and we all know it needs a good cleaning.
Pixies have made their way into many books and movies, including Harry Potter. They also have products and even haircuts named after them:
- Pixie Stix are little tubes of sugary candy. They are named specifically for pixies as the colored sugar resembles pixie dust.
- Pixie haircuts are very short bobs that are most attractive on small people – thus the pixie reference. See the effects of an adorable pixie haircut on your next Doll Palace doll!
