Whether you have skin problems or not, you need to take good care of your skin Ė and that means more than a swipe with a bar of soap and the occasional sunscreen. Taking proper care of your skin involves using the right items at the right time to help it stay clean, clear and beautiful.
Wash Your Face
You should be washing your face every night with a mild cleanser and splashing it again or possibly washing it again in the morning if you have oily skin or sweat a lot. While it might make more sense to use a heavy cleaner if you have skin trouble, too much soap and alcohol can actually hurt the delicate skin on your face and cause more breakouts. The exception would be products recommended by your dermatologist. Use warm water to gently clean away all the makeup, oil and grit from the day. Rinse your face thoroughly and then pat it dry Ė donít rub, that will irritate your skin for sure.
Every two to four days you can use an alcohol based toner on your skin to help get the deep dirt out of your pores. You should do this step after washing your face at night. Donít do this every day unless itís been recommended by a dermatologist as the process can actually dry out your skin. This makes your body think it needs to produce more oil instead of less. Be careful to keep toner away from your eyes and mouth and be gentle Ė the product will get into your pores without you pushing it in there.
Every time you wash your face, you must apply moisturizer. The cleaner and then toner if you used one will dry out your face if you donít apply moisture back into your skin. Keeping your skin moisturized will also help it stay youthful much, much longer. Your moisturizer should be oil free since you donít need more oil at this stage.
In the morning after a rinse or light cleaning, apply a moisturizer with sunscreen to help protect you from the sun at all times Ė even when youíre walking in parking lots and such. At night, apply a heavier, although not oily, moisturizer to help keep your skin moist all day long. If possible, apply the moisturizer while your skin is still damp from the washing after you dry off.
Itís a good idea to exfoliate your face from time to time, although not every day. Exfoliating with a special exfoliating facial product can help to clear away the old dead skin cells and let the brighter ones shine through. Be sure to use a gentle facial exfoliate or just a handful of sugar as most other exfoliates are too harsh Ė including a washcloth.
Masks and Special Treatments
Masks are a fun way to feel refreshed and pampered. If you use a mask on your face, be sure it is one that isnít oil or chemically based. You donít need to make your skin break out simply because you wanted to put cucumbers over your eyes at a sleep-over. Gentle is always better. There arenít many other treatments your skin needs at this age, but make-up remover can help clear away residue thatís hard to get with just cleanser.
If you establish a good skin care routine, youíll notice your face feeling cleaner and brighter Ė and looking that way, too. And remember, there are hundreds of facial products out there Ė you might have to try a few before you find the ones that are best for your individual skin type and conditions.
