I realize the world is full of runners, and I commend you for your jogging and sprinting and all that. I, however, am a walker. I love to walk Ė Iím such a great walker, Iíve considered getting those funky shoes with the big round heels just to enhance my stroll, but I havenít done it yet. Iím not sure how they would look with my skinny jeans. If youíre not really into walking, you should try it Ė you might gain more than you expected.
Walking Gets You Places
Those out there without a car already realize that walking is a nice option over having to beg for a ride or trying to ride a bike in a skirt. If you live close to a store or your school, it makes perfect sense to stroll over. You can grab a coffee or soda from the store on your way to or from school. On a day that youíre feeling energized, you can walk for miles in your comfortable clothing, of course. Bring a backpack and you can do some shopping, take some pictures, enjoy sightseeing and youíll be surprised what you can see and do on foot that you couldnít do on a car or even a bike.
Walking Allows Socialization
When youíre walking to school, look to see if others around you are walking, too. Or when your friends are over and everyone is looking glassy-eyed after too many rounds ofvideo games
, hop up and shoo everyone out the door for a walk. Walking with a group of friends or just one friend is especially nice because you can socialize while you walk and there is always something new around you that can stimulate conversation.
While you walk along, stop by the store for drinks and snacks or just make it a point to walk by the boys playing basketball or skateboarding at the park to see and be seen. Walking along slowly with friends is still about six hundred times better than sitting around doing nothing, especially if there is boy-watching involved, so grab your friends and get moving.
Walking Boosts Your Mood
We all know that exercise is terrific, but the down-side to all of that exercise is that you sweat Ė sometimes a lot. Granted, sweaty exercise feels better after the fact because you release more endorphins, but if youíre feeling rather blah and it looks interesting outside Ė either bright and sunny or dark and overcast, throw on a hat or coat and take a stroll. You donít have to walk fast enough to sweat and you can even stop to pick a flower or two, but so long as youíre moving, youíre getting your body active and that is a good feeling that lasts for hours.
A walk might be just the thing you need before a date or test as it settles your nerves and it gives your mind time to think. Use your MP3 player some of the time when you walk, but other times leave the music at home and walk in silence. Your mind will definitely fill the silence with any number of thoughts and youíll finish the walk feeling energized and at peace having thought through any number of things.
