I know the basics of Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino. He’s a young guy with great abs on a popular television show. Yup, I’ve got that Jersey Shore is a fun show to watch, and I understand that he’s good looking. What I don’t understand is why my friends are going bonkers for this guy instead of countless other good-looking guys out there. Actually, now that I’ve thought about it for a minute, they are just as crazy about at least eight or nine other guys, too, so I guess I understand their interest is justified.

What’s the Situation?

Personally, I like the name Mike Sorrentino. I never really understood nicknames when you give them to yourself. And this nickname is one that honestly just doesn’t make much sense to me, period. What does “The Situation” even mean? And why didn’t he just call himself “Abs” or “Killer” or something that would be easier to work into conversation? What tickles me the most though is when The Situation talks about The Situation in third person, “The Situation is out of here!” Right. Maybe it’s a habit he picked up when he was an exotic dancer.

Jersey Shore

The MTV show Jersey Shore is intensely popular with many viewers and is strongly opposed by many others (who are not viewers, obviously.) The show includes The Situation along with seven other housemates in a Real World type setting. The eight housemates are enjoying the offerings of Jersey Shore in the first season and then Miami in the second. They head back to Jersey for the third season.

The show was met with a fair amount of controversy. MTV promoted the show using a term that is considered offensive to Italian-Americans, which is the nationality break-down the eight house residents widely represent. The term “guido” was offensive to many, and the nature of the show, which portrays Italian-American young people in a less-than-wonderful light at times just rubs salt in the wounds. The protests began when the show was announced and while the show went on, it did lose some substantial sponsors including Dell.

Mike is one of the cocky men on the show who likes to show off his abs as often as possible and enjoys the advantages of reality television fame. I don’t have a real problem with the guy, but I don’t see the universal bad boy appeal that he apparently is sporting to reel in so many of my friends. Of course, it’s hard to tell if a reality show is the real version of a person, but The Situation is in an entirely different sort of situation these days, and this, at least, will be pretty telling. The Situation is dancing on Dancing with the Stars – and so far I’m withholding judgment.

The Situation with Dancing with the Stars

So far The Situation has managed five rehearsal days to learn a dance before his debut on live national television. The dance didn’t blow anyone away, and he actually tied for the worst score, but he’s still on the show after the first week. He didn’t have the prep time the others did because of his filming schedule, but now he’s on track with the rest of the “stars”, so we’ll just have to see how The Situation handles himself away from his usual pack of friends.

Wasn't expecting this? I don't watch any of those shows, so I have no comment other than I was thinking this would be an article about the site or turmoil between friends or something like that...
