Are you a big soda drinker? If so youíre likely doing yourself far more harm than good. In fact, there isnít much good about soda at all if you donít count the yummy bubbly taste. What makes soda so bad? Everything from obesity to tooth decay.

Liquid Candy

Soda (the non-diet kind) has been called liquid candy for a long time. And in essence the name is correct. There is more sugar in a can of Dr. Pepper than there is in a candy bar. Coke isnít far behind. The sugar and caffeine found in these drinks can do some seriously bad things to your whole body.

Your Teeth

The smallest problem youíll encounter (in reference to size, not scope) is the decay drinking soda will cause on your teeth. If you drink a dark soda, the caramel coloring in the drink will actually make your teeth turn yellow. The sugar and acid in a regular soda does serious damage to the enamel of your teeth by wearing it away and causing some nasty cavities. And donít think that diet soda is any better Ė the acid is still present and it can literally rot your teeth away.

Your Waistline

With all those extra calories, soda can have a serious impact on your waistline. In short, it makes you fat. Again, there are actually studies showing that diet soda isnít any better for you weight-wise. People who drink diet soda also tend to have trouble with excess weight. It could be because they think they can splurge thanks to the diet drink, or it might be because the chemicals in diet coke simply contribute to gaining weight in some way. Itís unclear at this point why, but it is clear that soda, diet or not, can certainly make you fat.

Your Mind

Believe it or not, there are studies now linking too much soda to mental health problems. And just how much is too much? Four cups a day. When you consider a cup is eight fluid ounces, four cups is the same as a large Coke from Sonic or McDonalds. As you sip your cold drink, you might be making yourself jittery, prone to headaches, hyperactive, panicky, sad, anxious and a slew of other nasty things.

If youíre a bit skeptical about the problems soda can cause inside your body, try this on for size. When there is a blood spill on concrete or cement, it is almost impossible to remove the stain. So how do the cops remove the blood spill from a public sidewalk or road? They pour Coke on it. If Coke will remove a stain on concrete, whatís it removing in your body?

What Should I Do?

Give up soda completely. Make the switch to non-sweetened ice tea, the occasional fruit juice, water, or Ė the best option for kids our age Ė low-fat milk. Because the one other thing that sodas do to us is remove calcium from our bones and make them weaker. Build them back up with the power of milk.

Also thought I'd mention that milk isn't the best option, especially for those of us who are lactose intolerant. Just make sure you get your calcium from alternate sources!

Cinnamon Dragon...to shed some light on the "cancer thing"...

It is proven that dark colas (Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper) are associated with kidney disease - likely because of the phosphoric acid, though that has not been proven. However, clear sodas (and root beer, yay!) are not linked to kidney disease.

Thats probably what you had heard

I admit, I'm quite fond of soda. But I've started drinking soda drinks such as Sieera Mist and Sprite, which are caffeine free, and also drinks such as Coca-Cola Zero, which has no calories. But I've also started drinking more "nutritious" drinks as well, such as orange juice or apple juice at lunch and the occasional cup of milk in the morning. But I despise low-fat milk, because it tastes horrible!! Anyway. . .great article!

I don't drink a lot of Sodas. When I do it's always Sprite or Sierra Mist, or something without caffeine. By the way It doesn't hurt to occasionally drink sodas.

I've been hearing that people who drink low fat milk instead of soda are leaner, and more active. I don't know if that's completely true or not though. I've *also* heard that diet sodas have some sort of cancer thing in them. Again, I don't know if that's true or not... just thought I'd share that. .__.

eww--I don't generally drink soda, I don't like the taste.

But I am a huge fan of tea. I like traditional teas, like jasmine or peony, but I like Celestial seasonings the best.
