There is a science behind colors, and Iím not talking about the color spectrum and prisms and such. The mood and energy of colors
is a popular topic on design shows and it has some very real world implications. When choosing a color for your bedroom, you might want to know what your colors are saying about you. Walking down the halls at school or sitting in the doctorís office, your mood can be affected by the colors around you. Of course, there are always skeptics who refuse to believe any of it, but it makes me wonder if this stuff works on a subconscious level.
Blue is considered to be the safest global color. It usually indicates peace, tranquility, harmony, water and confidence. It can also mean depression and cold, however. Blue can slow your pulse rate and lower your body temperature. It might also reduce your appetite. Businesses like blue because the color reflects reliability.
Black is actually the absence of color and light. It represents power, sophistication, elegance, wealth and formality. It is also the color of mourning and death. Black can also depict evil, fear, anger and unhappiness. Black can go either way Ė black cats are bad, but little black dresses are great.
Green is a common favorite color. It represents nature and the environment. It can also indicate generosity, fertility and vigor. Green is soothing and calms. It also has tremendous healing powers. Green can also mean inexperience and jealousy. It is considered a bad color for packaging products in business.
Orange is warm color that expresses energy. Itís bright and catches attention. It also is a traditional color of fall and all that it entails. Orange symbolizes balance, warmth, enthusiasm and flamboyance.
Purple is the color of royalty, spirituality, wisdom and enlightenment. It can also be arrogant and cruel. Purple is considered exotic. Purple die is made from the mucous gland of a snail. It was costly to obtain, so only royalty could afford it. Purple is considered trendy today, favored by the artist-type.
Red is energy and attention. Itís exciting and we associate red with strength, speed, and desire. It can also be a color for violence and anger. Red raises the blood pressure and makes the heart beat faster. It can also evoke a fight or flight reflex. Red is almost never seen in prisons, hospitals or psychiatric areas.
White is the balance of all colors. White is considered purity and cleanliness. It evokes feelings of peace and innocence. White tends to be a good color, usually as the opposite of black Ė the cowboy in the white hat is the good guy. White is also a shade common for the undecided. A blank slate, if you will.
Yellow is the color of happiness and optimism. Itís a color of hope, sunshine, summer and idealism. Yellow is also a color for cowards and betrayal. Just as easily as yellow means spirituality and inspiration, it also means illness and jealousy. Yellow roses are a symbol of friendship and in Asia, yellow is a sacred, imperial color.
