Your entire school career builds up to a few things. Graduation and college are obvious, but we can't forget the social culmination as well – the prom. In most schools, the largest dance of the year is reserved for seniors. In others they allow juniors and seniors to attend. In still others, prom simply means the last dance of the year, and there might be a freshman or sophomore prom. Regardless of who's invited, it's a big deal. An Expression of Self
Formal dances, and especially prom, are a time to really express yourself. Just who are you and what is your style? Maybe you are a bit funky or rock star? Your dress might reflect this, and you just might have to add a few embellishments of your own. The
goth girls are already used to wearing long black dresses, so this is simply an exchange of material and design. But even the most punk and goth chick occasionally feels the urge to go princess. If you are, what better time than now?
One Romantic Evening
Prom for many of us is as close as we will get to a
Cinderella story until our own wedding. And we might not even get as dressed up then as we do now. Prom is supposed to be a bit over the top and it's a chance to get dressed up, blow off steam and dance the night away. For seniors especially, this may be the last time you get to hang out with your high school friends at a dance. After prom comes finals, then graduation, then everyone goes their separate ways.
This goes a long way to explaining why so much thought goes into planning a single night. Dresses are one thing, and usually your date will match his vest or cummberbund to your style. Flowers must be arranged, meals planned and transportation figured out. While your mom's old car will get you there, it's far better to arrive in style. It's also a lot more fun to arrive with all of your closest friends and their dates.
Picking the Dress
Some girls have a dress picked out well in advance. With most proms occurring in April or May, the prime time to begin shopping…is now! It would be terrible to show up in the same dress as another girl (especially one you don't like) and you have the best selection when you shop early. How you pick is up to you. Some girls like to go try on fifty dresses for their friends and make a group decisions. Others prefer to pick out something in a magazine or website first before shopping.
Regardless of how you choose, it never hurts to do a little research first. Celebrities are dressing up this time of year and their fashion tends to set precedent for the rest of us.
