While Iím certainly not a super-star athlete, I like exercise. I like to feel like Iím taking care of myself in a healthy way and that Iím not just a complete couch potato the way the media says all the kids of this generation are. According to me, the best kinds of exercise are the ones you love the most.
I love being on a team. The way the team works together is fun, of course, but the real fun comes from hanging around those girls so much that you have inside jokes, know everyoneís secrets and essentially have your own small family at school or in the community. Team sports
are nice because you have support for the activity and you almost always have someone right there to help you through the tough spots and cheer you on to victory.
I am so not involved in any of these although I sincerely wish I was, but I love activities that are pretty. In fact, some of the prettiest forms of exercise are the most strenuous. Take for example ballet. It looks so effortless for those girls to just stand on their toes and pick their foot up over their head. The one time I tried it, I immediately fell down and I think I pulled something. The sheer muscular endurance of dance, figure skating gymnastics and cheer type activities are so impressive to me. You never think of them as super stars, but watching someone twirl around the floor and throw themselves in the air is outstanding exercise Ė even if I personally canít do it.
Team sports are great, and so is group exercise. In group exercise, you simply go with a bunch of others and walk, jog, bike, swim, dance, whatever. I kind of like a small group so that I can visit while I exercise and enjoy their company without worrying about disturbing others, but sometimes itís fun to be in a big crowd, too as that can be pretty motivating. My favorite group exercise is to gather up some of my friends and walk or just one friend and maybe jog around the neighborhood. Itís a nice way to chat and move your muscles at the same time.
I am also especially addicted to anything that makes me feel like Iím flying. I love to bike full out going as fast as possible watching the street fly by. I also love to ski because going fast down-hill certainly feels like flying. Iím not a good enough runner to say that running feels like flying although Iím sure it does for some. Not only is the speed fun, the quiet in your head of being alone while you run or bike or ski doesnít hurt either. You can use that quiet time to sort through your various questions, issues and problems from the day and to find inner peace. After all, that is a major component of exercise.
