Iíve been to my share of birthday parties over the years, and I have some strong opinions about which ones are the most fun. Sure, I love a co-ed get-together, but those are almost never as much fun as having just the girls together. You canít be yourself with a group of guys around Ė or even if you can, youíll be annoyed by how silly some of your best girlfriends behave around a pack of guys. Keep it girly and keep it fun.

The Jumping Birthday Party

Usually the giant rooms full of jumping toys are reserved for younger kids, but if you ask nicely and pay your money, youíll be allowed to play in a jumping room, too. These jumping things have plenty of names Ė airwalks, inflatable slides, blow-up obstacle courses, etcÖ But whatever you call them, bring your best girl pals together in a huge room full of them for an hour of intense sliding, running, jumping and climbing before settling down on little chairs for cake and ice cream.

The Destination Birthday Party

Iíve been lucky enough on a few occasions to ask a close group of friends to pack up and come with me somewhere special. Now, we donít all take off on a cruise Ė although if you can youíre certainly luckier than me, but we do go with parents to a rented beach or lake house to just hang out together for a weekend. Spending a whole weekend together is actually much more fun than you might imagine Ė itís a bonding experience you canít duplicate. Your party might very well be the most bonding things your friends have done this year if you can afford it.

Special Event Parties

I havenít been lucky enough to be at one, but I know that there are certain places like aquariums or museums that let you do a lock-in or spend-the-night event inside the venue. Think of how neat it would be to have a sleep-over with penguins and sea lions or to fall asleep after seeing the animals put to bed at night. Even if you donít spend the night, you might be able to get into a special venue for a private event after regular hours. See those penguins or play with butterflies or waterslides without anyone else around to bother you.

Show Parties

There are so many different special theater performances that come through medium and larger cities; it would be great to take advantage of the show as part of your birthday. You might pack up your friends to sit together at the rodeo or a special concert. See ice skating, baseball or anything you like. You might go out to eat before or after or just bring a cake along if youíre able to. Formal events such as evening theater can be followed up by dessert and coffee in a fancy venue, even. So long as youíre doing together, it will be special and more than a bit of fun.

My birthday will most likely involve glow sticks. And playing red rover, and fruit. Not to mention the most random and unexpected game of charades on the face of the planet. We're theater kids. Give us sugar and everything is funny.

Honestly, I'd rather have parties with guys; I've got, what, one female friend IRL that I used to regularly hang out with and she's so freaking WHINY that I am sick of hanging out with her!
