In the spirit of summer, Iím thinking about summer camps. Iíll admit it was Camp Rock that put it in my head simply because I havenít been able to attend a summer camp in years, but camp isnít just about Girl Scouts
and horseback riding. There are plenty of options out there, and if you dig around, you might just find a camp that would be perfect for you and maybe a few friends.
The Best of Summer CampSummer
camps are awesome for plenty of reasons. For one, you get a chance to get away from home, away from your parents, and away from your normal life for a week or two. You can practice a skill youíve been hoping to develop, such as basketball or singing. If youíre going to a co-ed camp, you might just meet someone special for a bit of camp romance.
The first summer camps are day camps. These are an introduction to the real thing. As far as Iím concerned, summer camp isnít really camp until youíre away from home, sleeping in an uncomfortable bed, and telling ghost stories around a fire. If you need a bit of refreshing on how great a summer camp can be, check out one of my favorites:Camp Rock
Ė Clichť, but music camps really do exist. They might not have quite so much glitz and glam, but a summer immersed in music can really bring your skills up a notch or ten.
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Ė Bridget is a super soccer star who heads to Mexico for an intense soccer camp. The camp is all girls, but if you recall, she manages to have a fling with a hot instructor while sheís there. (That fling really messes her up in the second book, by the way Ė maybe it will be mentioned in the movie sequel coming out August 6.)The Lightning Thief
Ė Technically, itís not a movie yet (tentatively scheduled for November 2009), but you might have read the Percy Jackson books. Itís unlikely youíll have a chance to be at a camp like Camp Half-blood, simply because youíre not the child of a major Greek god
or goddess. But the camp experience you read about is almost ordinary except for the flaming lava and river nymphs.
Your Summer Camp
This summer, itís not too late to sign up for camp in many places. Itís also not too soon to be making plans for next summer. Some of the best camps out there have waiting lists and can take up a year to get registered. So start looking now to find out what might be a great fit for you. Try something you already love, or try something completely new.
If youíve never been to camp before, look for weekend get-a-ways that would at least give you a chance to experience being away from home and learning something new. You might find these during the school year, too which makes them a nice break during the busier times of the year.
