Your finger nails need a bit of love and attention, and itís easy to just let them go or lop them off or bite them off (shudder) rather than care for your manicure properly. But taking care of your nails doesnít have to be serious business and it certainly doesnít have to change your style Ė itís just a smart thing to do to stay neat and presentable.

Keep Your Nails Clean

Your first step is always to keep your nails clean and clear of any dirt, grease or gross that can get under there. Both short or long nails have this problem at times, so be vigilant about checking under your nails when you wash your hands and before you eat to be sure thereís nothing under there. It can be hard to clear out under your nails, but a small nail brush will do the trick nicely. A nail brush looks a lot like a mini scrub brush and is designed to get up under the nails.

Keep Your Nails Even Lengths

Iím not going to tell you how to wear your nails length-wise. But I will ask you to keep them roughly all the same length. Either cut them all short or wear them all long, but donít let them grow all willy nilly on your hands where some are chipped and broken and others are long and scraggly. This is just not very attractive. Even if the only nail care youíre willing to do is to lop your nails off with a pair of clippers, do it. Often. If you want your nails longer, youíll need to keep them filed down to similar lengths and deal with the possibility of broken nails. When one breaks Ė youíre out of luck unless you want to put on a fake nail. Cut them and start growing all ten over again.

Shape Those Nails!

Again, the shape of your nails is entirely up to you. Some of it depends on the way your nails grow, but you have some choice in the matter when you pick up the nail file. I personally prefer wider, squared off nails, but you can also do them with a rounded point or file them into points if youíre really into that particular edgy look. Filing nails also helps them stay smooth at the ends so that you donít snag anything and tear one.

Keep Your Nails Moisturized

Your nails donít need as much moisture as the cuticle skin around them. Use hand lotion frequently and avoid letting that delicate skin get too dry. Otherwise it might crack and thatís painful.

The Rules of Painting Your Nails

If you choose to paint your nails, you can do any color combination you like Ė no rules on that. The rule for painting your nails is to manage them after they are painted. If all of your polish is chipping off and your nails look horrible with peeling paint and what not, use nail polish remover and take the paint off Ė even if itís only been a day or two. Bare, clean nails look far better than ones that are covered in chipping polish.

Do you get your nails done or do you do them yourself?

But the clammyness really suc.ks...

When I go get a Full Set of nails at the nail salon that usually doesn't last me long. I don't think I've ever been able to get a...what's that thing called when you just fix the part that grew out? A re-fill?

Anyway' anyone got some tips for clammy hands? I've tried rubbing alcohol before painting, dawn soap, and even vinegar. Nothing helps. So any tips are much appreciated!

Heh. My nails are hardly ever painted because they're hard to keep that way. I have clammy hands so the polish always comes off too soon from the moisture that builds up.

I do try to take care of them though. I keep them shaped and the same lengths (for the most part, my thumbnails are hard to grow so if they're both intact then I just clip the fingernails because they'll catch up soon).

I took off my silver polish the other day because it chipped severely. Right now it's just a clear coat...hopefully that will last a few days. *rolls eyes*

As for keeping my nails clean that's really difficult for me. I have dandruff on occasions of stress, so often enough. That, in addition to the clammyness, always leaves my nails with stuff underneath. I clean them out daily, but I can't live with a nail file glued to my hands all day.

Oh well. At least I was able to stop biting them! FINALLY my annual New Year's Resolution kept true!
