If you've ever rented the classic 80s movie, Splash, starring Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks, you'll understand the appeal of mermaids. From Disney's Little Mermaid to the fairytale of the same name, mermaids have been a part of our culture for hundreds of years.
People have been believing in mermaids for a long, long time. Back in the days of ancient Greece it was believed that a race of beings, half-woman, half-fish, inhabited the seas around Athens. These mermaids were known as Sirens, and their beautiful songs would lure sailors to their deaths on the jagged rocks from which the Sirens sang.
Do mermaids really exist?
Like many creatures of myth, there are, of course, those who believe that mermaids are more than just a fairytale, and if you look back through history you'll find countless examples of people who claim to have seen the creatures!
You don't have to believe in mermaids to enjoy them, though. Mermaids are famous for their beauty, with long, flowing hair and sparkling tails which can be any colour you like. Our Doll Palace mermaid dolls are as varied as the rest of ours dolls, allowing you to choose the doll that best matches your personality and style!
Very soon Mermaid Doll maker will be ready and even though you may not be able to dress mermaids up in the same way as ordinary dolls (there aren't many pairs of jeans or pants that'll fit over a tail, for starters), but they can still be customised with many hair styles, accessories, tops and tails.
Because Mermaids have that "other worldly" feel about them, you can be as inventive as you like when you're on our mermaid doll maker. Rather than sticking to traditional hair colours and boring old blues and blacks for clothes, choose sea colours of silver, green and turquoise, or create a modern-day mermaid with shocking pink or purple hair.
Mermaids and Mermen
Of course, you couldn't expect mermaids to live alone, so while mermaids themselves are always female, legend also tells of a race or mermen – beings with men's bodies and fishtails for legs, who live with them. As handsome as mermaids are beautiful, mermen aren't quite as popular as their female friends – there have been no movies made about them yet! – but with Hollywood so often going for sea-settings for movies, all that could be about to change! Will there be mermaids in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie? You'll have to watch it to find out!
Some films about mermaids:
- The Little Mermaid.
The Disney classic follows the adventures of Arial, a redheaded mermaid who falls in love with a prince.
Another story of a mermaid falling in love with a human and having to choose between water and land, this time it's Daryl Hannah who falls for Tom Hanks
OK, so technically there are no actual mermaids here, but this 90s films staring Cher, Winona Ryder and a very young Christina Ricci is great fun all the same!
