The Hispanic culture runs deep in the United States. In fact, it has been so instrumental in developing certain aspects of our country, the Hispanic culture is finally being recognized with its own month. September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month.

What does it mean to be Hispanic?

Technically Hispanic refers to anyone hailing from countries such as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American. Many of these countries were under Spanish or Portuguese influence hundreds of years ago which makes for similar traditions and cultures. Of course, that would be like saying that the United States, Australia and the UK all share a culture, so we simply have to realize that Hispanic is a very broad term. In fact, many Hispanics descend from native inhabitants rather than European ancestors.

It is also important to realize that Hispanic has nothing to do with skin color. Some Hispanics have very light skin and others have the same range of coloring as African-Americans. Hispanic has nothing to do with what you look like or skin and hair color. It has everything to do with where you or your ancestors came from.

Hispanic Heritage

Despite my love for food, Hispanics have had much more to do in the United States than add a great cuisine. Here are just a few things we can attribute to the Hispanic culture:

Food

Since itís my personal favorite, I decided to start with food. Of course Hispanic foods include many of my personal favorites such as Mexican and Cuban. These foods just have the kind of flavor and spices that make my mouth water and I havenít come across one that doesnít have at least one dish I enjoy. Fajitas, plantains, black beans, tacos, cilantro, yummmmÖ.

Music and Dance

Some of the most inspiring forms of music hail from south of the border. The most obvious form that springs to mind is salsa. The salsa rhythms and beats have inspired countless people to take up the dance or seek out the music. The tango is another popular dance that originated with the Hispanics.

There is also a great deal of Latin flavor in hip-hop and other mainstream kinds of music including rap and country. The salsa, the fandango and tango are among the most exciting and fascinating kinds of dance to perform or watch. Our music would never be as rich as it is now without the Hispanic influence.

Language

There are plenty of words that come from Spanish and Portuguese and they are not just located in states near the border or your local restaurants. Ever heard of mosquitoes? Arizona or Colorado? How about chocolate?

Culture

There is a lot in our culture that is a direct influence of Hispanics. Chocolate is an important one in my life. Ranching and the cattle industry can also thank Hispanic countries. In fact, the first cowboys (and some argue most of them) were Hispanic. Even the kind of government we have in states like California and Texas are derived from Hispanic forms of government.

People of Hispanic origins were in what we now call the United States long before the Europeans (and other ancestries) arrived. They have given, perhaps, more than you ever realized to our great country (and many others as well.)

Marshmellowmas, I'm gonna have to agree with gamerbe on this one. Having a month to celebrate different cultures is silly. No one celebrates European Heritage Month, or Anglo History Month, isn't that racist? By pointing out different cultures, even if we're attempting to do it in a positive light, we're still saying, "you are different", and that's not right. I'm not saying we should all be the same, but we shouldn't focus on things like race or ethnicity either. Also, you probably shouldn't use chatspeak to defend your intelligence. Just a thought.

You're right I can't and won't try to change what you think but I am not racist, and I will no longer try to justify myself to you. I only commented about how racist arugments were going on and that they shouldn't be, YOU were the one who turned it into a agrument. I am sorry I upset and confused you, and as far as I am concerned this disscusion will go no futher. Have a nice life.

I think it's stupid because we all come from the same planet don't we? With the evolution of the human race we all had run into eachother sometime don't you think? Why should we celebrate another point of origin and bring up racist arguments just like the ones that have been going on here? THAT is what's stupid! We need to move foward past our points of origin and try to better the human race as a whole. How can racism be forgotten if we keep doing things like this to bring it back up? And its' not just origin either the color of our hair, religeon, and even the way we dress! All of this brings the same thing over and over again. I think it's great what has become of culture through so many different influences. But we need to work on more important things now. Like oh, education? A better government, less war? Just a thought. But it seems like nothing is more important than being crule to one another. It's just so sad. I am sorry if I offended anyone. I have nothing more to say.

Marshmellowmas, when did I say that Americans are racist? I am American and I just stated that any time a certian race is disscused among a group of large ethnic vairance a argument breaks out. So if you could please point out where I said Americans are racist. I will correct you or myself and apologize or explain in detail what I ment. But unless you can do that you should kindly keep your mouth shut until you know what you're talking about.

You know that holidays and awareness months dedicated to a race just contributes to racism because it isolates that race in the media, showing the difference between that race and others. People should focus on man kinds simularities and realize that all humans are equal.

I knew it! Anytime an ethinc culture is brought into disscusion you can garuntee that there will ALWAYS be a "racist" argument. And this is one of the many reasons why America has such a low intelligence population. Where on this planet we orginated, what color our skin is or hair is, how we talk, how many languages we speak... All of this is stupid and insignificant. We shouldn't obsereve ANY heritage or culture. What we should do is take note on how our democracy is becoming a dictatorship or how poor our educational system is or maybe even how the banks own more of this country than the Government. THIS is what actually matters! Get over yourselves!
