When could there possibly be a better time to be green?
St. Patrick’s Day may celebrate a saint from Ireland, but it’s also a time to think about those green rolling hills and all of the beautiful nature that comes from a pretty sea island. Of course, most of us living in cities today don’t have vast rolling green hills, but we do have some green efforts we can be sure to do over St. Patrick’s Day.
Recycle!
If no other time of the year, let St. Patrick’s Day be the reminder you need to actually recycle. Drop your bottles in the recycle containers on your way to
school. Put the recyclable items out for curbside pick-up. Bring some newspapers to the recycle containers near your school. Whatever it is that you can do in your area to help and recycle, do it! You’ll make a big difference not just for yourself, but for the rest of the world as well.
Reuse!
One of the best ways to recycle is to look for ways to reuse the same things you’ve already worn. Let’s pretend that you’re digging through your closet looking for something green to wear to school. As you paw through everything that you own, you notice a huge collection of clothing items you haven’t worn in years. The question is – why is that stuff still in your closet?
You could do a lot with those items to help others. All you need to do is grab them out of your closet and then drop them off at a clothing donation center around your town. There are usually store fronts as well as recycle centers in parking lots and near grocery stores. Your cast offs can be reused and re-loved by someone new who needs some new outfits.
Reduce!
Even if you can’t do much in the way of recycling or even reusing items, you can certainly do something to reduce the amount of water and other resources you use. Don’t turn on every light in your house when you wake up. Use just one or two to get ready for the day. When you leave the room, be sure to turn them off. Then, when you brush your teeth, be sure to turn off the water while you’re brushing. You can save electricity by unplugging things that tend to drain it like toasters, coffee makers and chargers. A quick pass around your house will give you even more ideas of ways to conserve as much as possible.
Think Green!
Of course, one of the best ways to
celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is to simply wear green. When you’re digging for a green shirt to wear, keep an eye out for one that motivates others to make the same green choices that you’re making. It’s not an accident that there are so many green recycle shirts. Snag one and you’ll great for the holidays and have plenty to say through your look at the same time.
