Emma DollIt's a huge debate. Is fur okay? Fur has been making a comeback in the last few years as a luxury item. A lot of celebrities have been wearing fur, while others are still adamantly opposed to it. Believe it or not, fur has not been the object of such debate for centuries. It is only in the last few decades that it became so contested.

Fur Clothing

Fur was one of the earliest forms of clothing. Even Adam and Eve in the Bible wore "clothing of skin" after being banished from the Garden of Eden. Religious examples aside, fur has been a clothing staple for thousands of years. The earliest forms of man wore variations of fur and leather before the introduction of woven materials. Even today, in northern climates, only fur has the insulating properties required to maintain optimum warmth and comfort.

The fur that is so hotly debated has less to do with staying alive comfortably, and more to do with style and fashion. While you can't deny fur is considered incredibly stylish by much of the population and a luxury item, one can argue whether it is really necessary to have it at all.

Fur Doll

The Arguments against Fur

Many feel that the process used to make fur items is inhumane and unnecessary. Much of the fur used in jackets, gloves, and accessories is actually farmed, much like the meat we eat. The animals, including fox and mink, are raised in captivity and their fur is used for luxury items. Of course, some fur, such as seal and beaver, can only be had by capturing the animal in the wild. That fur is used for more practical clothing rather than designer jackets.

Many groups argue that fur is a waste of an animal's life and is not necessary. Many places where fur is popular do not reach the Arctic temperatures which might require it, and even those places with freezing temperatures have alternative options to using fur if they choose to. To raise an animal exclusively for its coat without using any other body part is considered extremely wasteful and unjust by these individuals and groups.

The Arguments for Fur

Fur DollThose who consider fur to be an acceptable fashion item defend their position with the same fervor as those who oppose it. To raise an animal for its fur is wasteful, claim those against it. Those for fur then argue that faux, or fake, fur is actually a petroleum product which can damage the environment. Natural fur is a renewable resource since the animals providing it can be easily bred, but faux fur uses oil products which can not be renewed.

In addition to the environmental arguments, the most obvious arguments are the natural beauty and warmth of the fur. It has become an extremely stylish accessory for many of the celebrities in the same way expensive jewelry has. If one can afford it and there are no laws against it, why shouldn't a person own a fur if they chose to?

While this argument has no obvious solution, it has spurned many a debate and has received a great deal of publicity over the years. Almost everyone has an opinion on the topic, but short of the government stopping all fur products, there will never be a clear answer. Of course, if you ban the fur, will you ban leather, meat, and all other animal products as well? It does make one think...

I'm just shocked that people would actually kill for fur! I mean, that is just cruel. The only legitamite reason to wear one is if you are in the Artic. This is a wonderful article!

I'm against wearing fur, unless I get lost in the wilderness and have to kill for survival. Faux fur is just as bad as real fur--they both waste our precious natural resources.

if only they mentioned how horrible it is for the animals when they are getting skinned alive and their bodies are thrown into a pile. Sometimes they are still alive after being skinned and they have to suffer through the pain.

there is something else i should mention the killing of these animals should stop exactly how many coats does 1 need

did you also know that there are fur storages so why do we need to keep killing these animals if your one who likes fur -go to a storage(furrier) stop the killings

i think the settlement of this problem is to stop making both real and faux fur cause both contribute to a much heated debate- real fur- for un-nessecary killing of animals, faux fur- or the further of en-dangering ourselves and the earth with toxic chemicals/poisons

ok i read this article and the responce you guys gave, however some of you missed a point here and a bit in the article as well.

early man did not have the type of clothing we have today ,the indians used fur cause it kept them warm but think for a sec it wasnt fox or mink fur they used it was buffalo and of course they not only hunted these animals for fur but for food as well.

I do agree with teddyfarahbear (what a name) about it being cruelty not just wastefullness.

About the antartic now thats a story in it's self eskimo's do need warmth so there I can understan but what i cant understand is the cruelty against seals and baby seals how about that clubbing a seal to death now that's just as cruel as skinning a fox/mink

I'm against any kinds of fur. I'm a tree hugger, cept I eat meat so I believe you should cut down on the non renewable fossil fuels unless it really is necessary. And mere fashion accessories isn't a necesity. Instead, we should find a new way to make fake fur using renewable materials.

Animals aren't here for us. They're here for their own purposes and those purposes aren't to be tortured to death for fur and meat. In fur factories they skin them alive, then toss them into a trash bin to lay amongst corpses of others. A man recorded this process on tape and said, "One animal had just enough strength to look up into the camera and blink twice before falling over dead." Imagine if someone took a huge blade and started slowly scraping off your skin. In some cities in China they take stray animals and kill them for fur and food. FUR IS MURDER, END IT NOW!!!

I think get a fur from every animal THEN CLONE the fure then nobody has to kill another creature.

We should also do this with food so even the poor can have some if you have ever read the fiction book series "Among The Hidden" it's a great book!!

I see no mentioning of where a lot of fur traders use puppies and kittens, and merely label them 'fox' and 'mink'. Nor how these traders skin the poor things alive.

I'm also willing to bet the same people against 'faux fur' for enviromental reasons drive gas guzzling cares and use several cans of air destroying hair spray yearly too. Thus, their points are null and void.

I have to be frank- I wasn't wild about this article. The argument isn't about wastefulness, it's about CRUELTY. Wastefull or not, it's CRUEL.
