You want to get your friends something fun and special for the holidays
, but you don’t want to spend all of your money on a handful of people – even if they are the most important people in your life. You need fun presents that are easy to find, fun to give, and meaningful to the people you are sharing them with. This might be a tall order, but not for you – you’re crafty.
The Friendship Bracelet
The official friendship bracelet is a woven bracelet made of threads in a variety of colors. The threads are woven together in a special way and the resulting bracelet is tied onto a friend’s wrist. The bracelet can not be removed, and must be worn off over time to show how strong the friendship is between the person who made the bracelet and the person who’s wearing it.
Friendship bracelets are a great option for a holiday
gift. You can make the original woven kind or your own variety of beaded, woven or interlocking bracelet. Use beads to spell out certain messages or to put your initials together. You can make matching bracelets for your entire crew by including everyone’s initials together, special words or nicknames you’ve given each other. Taking time to pull the bracelets together carefully and thoughtfully will make them an especially meaningful gift. You can also make ankle bracelets or necklaces rather than regular bracelets if you’d prefer.
Movies such as High Fidelity will give you a great example of how powerful a “mix tape” can be. Before the days of playlists and MP3s, to put all of your favorite songs together, you had to record each song from a record, tape or CD onto a blank tape. The mix of songs on these tapes gave them the name “mix tape.” Today, you’d be hard-pressed to find a tape player at all, but the thoughtful arrangement of songs that once went on a mix tape can still be yours to share.
Hop on iTunes or another MP3 program to browse through and buy the songs that are meaningful to you and your group of friends. These might be songs that you like to sing together, songs that remind you of each of your friends, songs that remind you of boys you like to talk about together or just songs that talk about how special your friendship is.
Arrange the songs in a playlist and add comments about each one either on paper or by recording your comments as audio files embedded within the MP3s. Then, when you download the list onto your friends’ iPods or burn it to a special CD, your thoughtful selection and comments about why each song is meaningful will be there to cherish forever.
One good idea is to make the mix and then burn the songs to a CD. Package the CDs carefully along with a letter to each friend telling them why you picked the songs you did and why those songs are especially meaningful to you. Wrap up the Christmas gift and share it with your friend. The songs and CD will be fun, of course, but the true gift your friends will cherish is your notes about how special your friendship is and how much she means to you.
