Still wired after the school
year and waiting for summer to really begin? Youíd better get started on all that relaxing if you think youíre going to really mellow out this summer. Could it be you donít actually remember how to relax and have a good time? Try a few of these suggestions to see if you can get the relaxation juices flowing.
Watch Terrible Reality Shows
Nothing says ďjust hanging out relaxingĒ like watching trash television. If youíre filling your mind with the dumb antics of people searching for money and willing to do anything Ė no matter how gross or bizarre Ė to get it, you know youíre got your relaxation under control.
Read a Book Your English Teach Would Hate
The world is full of fine literature, but fortunately it has its fair share of fun page-turners, too. Donít feel obligated to start off your summer
reading with Beowulf or whatever else youíve been assigned. Instead, head to the library and look for the paperbacks that are almost falling apart.
These are guaranteed to be worth reading Ė lots of other people obviously thought so. (If you need a bit of extra proof Ė find Beowulf. Looks beautiful, doesnít it? Thatís because itís almost never been read in the fifty years itís spent on the library shelf. Worthy reading? Sure Ė Fun? Not so much.)
Spend the Day in Your Jammies
You canít take yourself too serious or get very much productively done if youíre flopping around the house in your bunny slippers and Super Girl pajama set. In fact, wearing your jammies from morning to night might feel like a complete waste of a day Ė but I beg to differ. Relaxation and rest is extremely important, especially for teenage girls. So build a day of relaxation into your schedule by refusing to get dressed for anything at all.
Take $5 to the Mall
$5 doesnít buy much these days, so that is why you canít be serious about anything if thatís all you have to spend. Walk the mall with your friends until you find the perfect little bracelet to buy with your loot. Or, you can do what I do when Iím down to my last $5. I watch my friends stress out about buying the perfect outfit or trying to decide between two different pairs of shoes. Then we all head to the food court where I buy something yummy to munch on while we talk (and talk and talk and talk.)
Turn Off the Electronics
When youíre tuned into the world, itís easy to get spun up about things. But if you donít hear the news or know that you need to get back online in just a few minutes, you can focus on other things like playing dolls with your baby sister or messing around in the kitchen with your mom. You can always check your messages later, but once you have everything turned off or put away in your room, youíll notice that youíre far less jumpy Ė maybe all those text messages are getting under your skin.
