Why do we always think of flipping burgers and nametags when we think about our first "real" job? Sure, babysitting and helping out around the house can earn some serious cash, but when you're ready to take the plunge into the world of work outside of your neighborhood, options seem rather limited. If do-you-want-fries-with-that is totally depressing, considering a job that might be a bit more entertaining as well as financially rewarding.

Retail

One of the largest industries that is often overlooked or just plain intimidating to teenagers is retail. Retail is just a fancy name for places where you buy stuff. If you're anything like me, you already head to the mall on a regular basis.While you're scoping out the latest fashions, you might also take a peek at some of the sales people. In many of the stores, you may be surprised to see that they are girls not much older than you.

Some stores will only hire adults over eighteen, but plenty of others know high school kids are responsible. The holiday season is the best time to find a job in retail since so many stores need extra help during the season. You already wear the clothes; why not work in the store? You will probably also get a discount!

Child Care

Like kids? Babysitting is a nice way to bring in a few extra bucks, but if you're looking for something with a bit more structure, and perhaps a bit more pay, consider working in child care. Day cares and the after school programs they run are always looking for young people to help take care of the kids.

Working in a day care is the perfect after school job. The hours will always fit into your schedule since most close around six or seven PM, and there are not that many other jobs that encourage you to be silly, play with toys and get dirty on a regular basis.

Receptionist

If you have a dream of being a hair stylist, dentist or even a lawyer someday, you can get a lot closer to the action than you may have thought possible. Most offices and salons need someone to answer the phones, take messages and schedule appointments.There is no reason that person can't be you.

It's important to remember though, that if you're going to work in an office or salon, you must not only act the part, you must look the part, too. Most lawyers aren't running around in jeans and cute tops. Make sure you're ready to take on whatever sort of personality or identity you need to have to make this job successful and fun.

Tourist Traps

Over the summer, tourists flock to many cities and towns. Tourist attractions need warm bodies to man the gift shops, run rides and keep things under control. Love your local amusement park? You might be surprised at how excited they would be to hire you to help run the rides or hand out ice cream cones.

Even the tourist attractions you don't always think of like aquariums, museums and parks may be willing to hire teenagers. Now, wouldn't you much rather be hanging out with Mickey than slaving away at Mickey-D's?
